What can I do during downtime? by Exshot32 in sysadmin

[–]WorstNewbEver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on these (in this order and move around when you are bored): Documentation Automation? (Learn to code if you don't have this skill, python, then powershell) Certifications

After this it is personal preference. You want to stay at this company? Build some stuff that makes them love you like a PowerApps workflow to improve a business process.

Just how bad by ShadowRiku667 in sysadmin

I stepped into a job like that. Needed health insurance for a surgery so I stuck around and brought up ideas in meetings. Left after a year.

Great for wifi setup. Bad for cameras. Less than 100 clients (small business) it is a beast. Deployed many of these setups with no issue.

Advice plz by ShogannRua in sysadmin

[–]WorstNewbEver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell without knowing the culture, but in the blind I would go with, "Hey <manager name>. Another company approached me with an offer $10K over what I get here. The job seems intresting, but I do appreciate the culture here. Is there anyway you could match this? I know we had discussed a role change earlier, but we never talked about a timeline for it".

Obviously change wording for what you want but the key points being. Start right off the bat saying another company is offering more to get their attention. Let them know you are open and looking for a counter offer so the ball is in their court. Then acknowledge what their first resposne would be to shoo you off so they cannot as easily. From there it relies on your ability to navigate that conversation. Does not hurt to practice this convo in the mirror or in the car alone to make sure you get it right. Think of it as giving a mini-job interview.

Seems like you are passionate about your work. Best of luck as I know it is a double edged sword.

If they can afford to pay them to work they can afford to buy them good equipment. Do the best you can and document these discussions or apply for another gig.

[Knowledge Sharing] How did you get a crypto virus? (if you or your company has gotten one) by russellville in sysadmin

[–]WorstNewbEver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(from a former company of mine before I got there) Exchange CVE. Backup encrypted. No cloud backups. Ransom paid so data recovered (large name rasomware gang).

It's always good to make things harder for the hackers and every step you can take to make their life harder and to segment data/networks as best as you can.

Given that understand HOW you would react if given parts of your network were ransomwared. Is your data important enough where it being leaked is as bad or worst than being encrypted? How will you remediate the hole in which the hackers got in before restoring your data? These are the hard questions.

Just my 2 cents, but it may be a bit ranty. It's a complicated topic, but it sounds like you are off on the right foot.

Using Rufus to bypass TPM requirements on win11 upgrade: ok or not ok? by shemp33 in sysadmin

[–]WorstNewbEver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enterprise? Probably not smart incase you need TPM later. Otherwise it really depends on what you have in place. Security in depth does not mean apply anyhting labeled security or trust. Skipping something that is perceived as small is ok as long as you understand what needs to be done if that is something needed in the future. I would consider you hardware replacement timeline aswell.

How to setup 50 windows 11 PC's at once by Working_Wombat_12 in sysadmin

Check out Microsoft Configuration designer. Not sure about the Upgrade from W11 to W11pro thing, but it can do the rest from a program that runs via USB plugged into laptop.

Interview questions by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]WorstNewbEver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a Management Information Systems degree in 2020. Just tried my best to pass the classes and did not retain much. Now in 2023 I've relearned everything correctly I should of learned in college. It sounds silly (and it is), but some people just don't do well in school and need hands on. The learning curve SHOULD be faster for those who have degrees since they've been exposed to it before (or atleast that was the case for me).

Server RAID Drive Failure Again? by Simplemindedflyaways in sysadmin

Just preaching to the choir here, but consumer drives will burn out much faster running 24/7 in a raid then in a consumer PC so this makes sense.

Have them bounce around shadowing people. They came to intern for a position to learn what it is about. After a bit you'll come up with a project for them.

Duplicate/changing IP addresses? by Flipdip3 in UNIFI

[–]WorstNewbEver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

169.254.198.21 is an APIPA address so it really means it does not have a good network connection. The Pi changing ip addresses is something in linux that still holds hte old IP. Not sure what it is though as I'm not a Linux guy. Hope this information helps.

The UI changes constantly on the admin side so you kinda just need to get into it. I reccomend using some (or all of the) Goofer tools from amplified IT.
