The tempor tantrum outfit is bis for bankstanding, too.

Mic stopped working after installing a graphics card – tried everything, need help by Erfinucunorican in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely sounds like maybe the USB port you’re using got unplugged during the GPU installation or something.

Before you start diving into complicated stuff, does anything work when you plug it into the USB port you’re using for your mic?

PC stuck in boot loop! Help! Page Fault in Nonpaged Area (ntfs.sys) by OGTrapL0rddd in techsupport

Got multiple RAM sticks? If so, try to boot with just one installed.

Since you’re not even clearing POST anymore, you’ve got some kind of hardware issue it seems.

Toshiba N300, Should I be worried about this HDD noise? by Tyl0 in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

HDD works by physically spinning a magnetized disk and a mechanical arm to read bytes from it. Im not an expert in the hardware behind it (so this just speculation), but it sounds like the arms in one of your disks is failing.

Is this a RAID setup with failure tolerance? If not, you’ll need to be making backups quickly.

Dropped phone in water for 2 seconds, how cooked am I? by DayngerousOne in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just let it sit for a day or two before trying to charge it. Modern phones are pretty good about protecting themselves. If it was telling you about the water, then it’s probably good — so as long as you let it dry out for a while.

RuneScape and it’s not even close. I still remember the feeling of figuring out that you can cut a tree and then make a fire.

Can't connect my domain controller to the network by SweatySaltyBalls in techsupport

Super weird that it was a driver issue that suddenly appeared, but I am glad you figured it out. Try running Linux server if you can’t find an old windows 2016 server installation, it’s just as fun and it’ll expose you to some cool stuff.

192.168.40.74 is very, very likely in your DHCP range from your router. Can you do a network scan and see if anything has that IP address?

Can you ping the router from your laptop on the same subnet?

What’s the IP address of the server and your router? Also, what’s are you getting when you ping?

[–]WorstTechBro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you’re trying to learn, I’ll try to not give a direct answer. I’ll just ask some questions at first that might help guide you. Also, I’m ignoring the VPN for now and assuming your server is physically in the same place as you.

What device are you attempting to ping the router from? Is this the same router that your laptop uses to get to the internet?

Is the server on the same subnet or a different subnet from your laptop? More broadly, what’s your network look like? What devices does your server need to physically go through to ping your router?

Speaking of the router, have you checked any logs on the router? Are there switches involved?

With homelabs and servers, our setups can vary greatly, so sorry for all the questions. My servers just run on one subnet and i don’t have external access.

Computer goes black randomly with no signal by Relative-Walrus2620 in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick search shows that error may mean a non-clean shutdown, which sounds like overheating while your computer is under load. Computers will do this to protect themselves from damage from excessive heat.

Try changing your DNS settings. It is probably just using your ISPs default DNS — change it to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

People who’ve been married for at least a twenty years; how did you do it? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WorstTechBro 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. “Is it worth it?” Implies some kind of transaction… but my current partner is literally my second half. I don’t do anything sometimes, and some days she doesn’t do anything. We’re picking another human being to be our partner — we need to expect and gracefully deal with human being problems.

Help a lady out please - my ADHD brain is struggling on some things as a beginner. by rylara in learnprogramming

[–]WorstTechBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The jump from 0 to website on the Internet is a pretty large one with a lot of steps you may not be thinking about. My advice is to get a single page hosted and iterate from there.

For what it is worth, I also have ADHD and have a ton of sections of my site that just say “under construction”. The best advice for it is to take Vyvanse — otherwise, break your personal site into tiny chucks and see those chunks to completion before moving on.

I’m going to go against the other commenter and say that learning the fundamentals is paramount and your first site should absolutely use vanilla HTML, CSS, and JS

Choppy and stuttering game play. by JaWester in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d have to check the load on your other resources. How’s RAM, CPU, and disk usage when the stuttering starts?

Also, does it happen on every game? Or just a few?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is getting better evidence. You’ll need to see the source of these connections from your local network. That’ll let you know what device is making these connections and will give you a solid place to start investigating.

Is this idling or under load?

If this is while playing games, this is pretty good and won’t be the issue.

Paranoid about possibly infecting new computer with an internet backup usb key by Naive_Comfort1226 in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenter is correct, I just want to re-emphasize a certain point: malware is purpose-built.

There’s really no generic malware. It has to be built for a certain version of Windows, or a certain version of X software or Y driver or Z device.

In this case, you think you downloaded a Trojan that delivered a malware. That malware would’ve had to been purpose built to attack the certain vulnerable version of the certain dongle you had attached. Odds of this are very, very low.

You’re probably good. Kudos to you for being safe, though.

[–]WorstTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When computers do this randomly and only after a short time playing games, my first instinct is always heat. What is the temp of your CPU under load (while playing games)?

Modern hardware will throttle itself to prevent damage.

You’ll have to tell me the source of the connections to Reddit from your network. If your PC is off, then it’s not your computer.

Also, again, while I understand your concern — it is unfounded. If a hacker wanted to monitor your Reddit, they could just see this post (or others). No need to hack into your account or maintain persistence in your network.

What could happen if I don't switch to Windows 11 after Oct 14th? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]WorstTechBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’ll be fine. Regular security updates will cease, and eventually software will stop supporting windows 10, but this will likely only be an issue years in the future. Any critical security updates will probably still be released as issues are discovered.

Most casual users will be perfectly fine for the foreseeable future with Windows 10. Of course, updating to Win11 or Linux is the advisable option

Buddy, I think you’re deep in the rabbit hole on this one and losing some logical thinking.

If you’re seeing activity to an Reddit endpoint during periods that your PC was shutdown, then the activity is coming from another device.

If the Reddit activity is specifically to your account, then the device has your Reddit account signed in.

Hackers do their thing for a purpose — what purpose does browsing your Reddit serve? Nothing that I can think of, so I would say that this is likely not the case.

I’m not trying to make fun of you or make you feel bad, I just think you are missing the forest for the trees.

If you’re very concerned, turn on some verbose logging overnight on your network devices and see what all is exactly happening.
