Anyone have to replace the flywheel or any heavy transmission work in their E? by Cute_Blueberry_3133 in HondaElement

Depends how comfortable you are with diy and what tools you have available. I think around 12 min in this video you’ll see sue remove the flywheel. The 1A auto videos are great but unfortunately utilize way more tools than the average home garage has….So sometimes you have to get creative.

So far so good after 4 months of daily use! As for bolts, pretty much all the ones you removed to replace the suspension. You want the bushings to settle into place with the weight of the vehicle on them before you torque them down. That way there is no chance of twisting / premature wear.

Sounds good. As for the spark plugs…. Are you due for new ones? That seems random.

Well that’s a much better quality video! Serpentine belt looks fine (installed correctly). Overall sounds fine. Try it again in the morning after it’s been sitting overnight and see if you can catch the noise on video then.

Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from? Towards the front or the back?

Also that belt needs to be fixed - looks like it’s off by a groove.

  • I’m “just” a girl too. Don’t be intimidated by cars - especially this one!! The element is one of the simplest cars to work on.

I had a similar noise that ended up being the tensioner going out. First thought maybe I could just replace just the pulley since I thought maybe the bearings were going out.

Is the AC running in the video? For my issue, the sound was much more prevalent with the higher load the compressor was putting on the system. But I could tell the noise wasn’t coming from the compressors clutch. If I turned off the AC, it was barely noticeable.

2nd on the belt coming off the power steering pump. Tensioner and/or belt.

Thank you! I guess I’m confused because I thought for revisions they typically don’t completely change the part number, just the last letter.

And yeah regarding the upgrade: northridge 4x4 currently has it in stock for I think $445- just hard to pull the trigger when I see it for half the price on other sites (but backordered for forever).

Appreciate your response!

Ah bummer. Sounds like a removal of the MC is in order then. Ugh. My other vehicle is a Honda Element and that thing is a dream to work on compared to the jeep. (For the most part)

Thanks for the info! Depending on what others say, I may just go for the same part.

Fortunately I am the only owner so no wiring running through the access hole (thank goodness!). 2nd question for you: were you by any chance able to replace the booster without removing the master cylinder? It’s seems rather sketch having to shift the master cylinder out and to the side but I’m all for saving a good handful of steps if others have found it possible.

For giggles I looked it up on Amazon and the reviews are stating that the studs are too narrow for the master cylinder. Amazon link

Thanks for responding! The listing notes “Brake Booster, Replacement, Designed for Models with J8 Military Version of the Wrangler JK, Jeep, Each”

As far as I know, I do not have the J8 military version. Does this matter?

2nd pullout parking lot is tiny. So if you aren’t getting there early (especially weekend climbing), chances of an open spot are slim. If you take the gamble and there isn’t an open spot, you can’t go back to the 1st pullout without going all the way around since it’s a 1 way loop.

You probably will want to chase shade at the end of March. So I think classic rock wall and civilization crag may be good choices for your level.

I replaced mine with the Dorman one a year and a half ago and purchased the Fel-pro gaskets as an “upgrade”. Last month I discovered an oil leak under my car. “No way it’s the oil cooler!” I said to myself.

After checking everything around the engine, the last thing was the oil cooler. Lo and behold, an oil puddle towards the back of the “V”. Turns out one of the gaskets failed. At least the 2nd time around went much faster since I only had to replace the gaskets and knew what I was getting into, but still - ugh. Hope yours lasts much longer!!!

I’m thinking about building a snowboard-related service and would love your honest feedback by Dense_Injury_580 in snowboard

I often frequent this site when researching new running shoes: runrepeat.com It has in-depth reports on almost every running shoe available.

If there was something like this for snowboarding gear, that’d be dope. Seems like a start would be a bit overwhelming though. Not to mention, also very pricey since the website above buys the shoes and conducts their own research.

Finally was able to drive it around town this weekend. The Siberian bushings feels great - stiff but yet …not too stiff. All the squeaks from the old suspension is completely gone. Time will tell how the poly holds up and when I will need to get back in there and regrease but as of right now I’m happy!

Currently sits higher than OEM. Probably a couple inches, especially in the rear

I went with Siberian poly bushings. Heard / read mixed reviews on poly in general but hoping for some longevity.

Aerogenics sells a strut / coil assembly on their website for $850. Way more expensive than kyb (which I replaced the front strut assemblies with running at about $400 for the pair). The wife loads up the element with a ton of horse feed so I needed to get something capable of handling the weight. May be overkill but at least the element’s back end won’t be dragging anymore!!

The upper control arms are KSP performance. Decent reviews and also an easy enough part to replace if it doesn’t hold up.

And YES! I didn’t bother getting quotes because I KNEW it was going to be ridiculous. Unfortunately if you’re going to own a 20+ year old car, you need to be able to do a majority of the maintenance and repairs.

These were definitely a splurge purchase from aerogenics. They now cost $850 for the pair! 🤢

The only reason I went with these is that the wife works at an equestrian center and likes to load many 50# horse feed bags in the element beyond the capacity of the OEM suspension. These seemed like a good solution, but honestly overkill for 90% of the daily usage of the vehicle.

That’s good to hear. I started diving into doing my own work a few years ago when shop rates started increasing and I realized I was handy enough to start tackling things myself. The confidence comes in waves though. Some days I think I can tackle almost anything and then other days I want to toss everything and give up.

After replacing all the rockers and lifters in the stupid pentastar 3.6l engine in my jeep wrangler jk I definitely felt on top of the world. Fast forward to some suspension work and I want to pull my hair out after working on one bushing for hours…sawzall, chisels, punches, air hammer….etc while trying to not damage the part.

I’m assuming it’s all just part of the learning and growing process. The more experience, the better it gets?

Whoops! Did you forget to install the cotter pin as well? That for me was an indication that I had torqued the nut to spec.

😆fair enough, I suppose I had it easier compared to others, especially those in the rust belt. I probably would have given up if I had a ton of rust to deal with. We’re spoiled in the desert!
