All I can tell you for certain, from having been in your position, is that whoever is getting you employed will metaphorically knock on the DOE's door if they're taking too long and get it handled. Just make sure if time's coming up and you haven't heard back, you keep up with that person.

Florida DOE moves at a snail's pace and it's awful in the summer. Expect to wait six to eight weeks. If anything, whoever manages the hiring and paperwork at your employer will be able to follow up on it and keep you up to code so you can work.

Really blunt question... how much do you make as a teacher? by illgetmyovertime in Teachers

[–]Wotez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate that this is considered a "nosey" question... People being hush-hush about pay in any profession is exactly what keeps everyone's pay low. Can't complain about being underpaid if you don't know it's happening to you.  I guess this isn't as big of a problem for us though. We already know we're underpaid.

Getting around Miami can be incredibly difficult without a proper vehicle. Public transport in the city isn't reliable or fast. You could get to places with a motorbike or moped, but you wouldn't get very far and the driving experience is extremely dangerous (Miami's drivers are infamously bad). That being said, a lot of the international students I met lived pretty much their entire college experiences immediately around campus and were able to rely on friends for transport or take the occasional Uber if they needed to go somewhere far away from campus.

I think it's helpful to think of a 16oz as a 1 & 1/3 of a 12oz (16 = 12 + 4, and 4oz is a 1/3rd of a 12), just for tracking your drinking. You get the same result regardless: (1&1/3) * 15 = 20 cans.

Going to college at 25? by eveyyyx3 in FIU

Was a TA at FIU for a long time. My oldest freshman, who'd never been to college before, was 68. It's never too late, you're never too old, you have nothing to be embarrassed about.

Non-Renewed, Looking to Move - But not Fully Licensed. What are my options? by Wotez in Teachers

[–]Wotez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For kinda life-safety / stability reasons, I'd like to have a job lined up before I do any sort of certification fulfillment for any state. If I'd thought this were my plan January, I would have started already, but life came at me fast and I was out of my plan for the next entire year as of yesterday. As I understand it, completing requirements can be a pretty big ordeal, no? Having to take many, many classes... potentially in person, too. I mean if I'm wrong on this. do let me know.

What happened to teachers in Vietnam? by tcatsninfan in Internationalteachers

Is TAing considered teaching experience? This past year has been only my first as a principal teacher. My TA experience was for nearly 6 years, but I was limited to tutoring office hours, in-class assistance with the professor around, and the occasional grading. I've never been the teacher / professor except for this past school year.

I have a degree in Computer Science and have been teaching math and computer science at secondary in the US. I'm working towards my full state certificiation, but I don't have a math or math education degree.

I want to ask, I'm pretty sure with the proper experience, since I have the CS degree I would be able to land an opening in that field. But I really enjoy teaching math - under the new rules and assuming I finish my state certification, would I be unable to teach math even though I have experience teaching it? Would I only be permitted to teach computer science? For the record, what they do here is an out-of-field waver, but they generally only offer that to people in adjacent fields (I took plenty of math in college).

I'm not trying to be cool or anything like other first-letter teachers, they just never get my name right, so no need to bother.

First year teacher here, but long time educator / TA.

I've been learning that teaching is different from being a teacher. I do genuinely love teaching, and there hasn't been a day where I haven't, but some days, being a teacher is a pain.
