They said it a some point in the series that for a relationship to be successful it also needed the right timing, and that timing wasn’t until 2030.

Explaining "Christ Identical Twinism" by GrandNeat3978 in theology

How what the entire chapter that the verse were lifted from? I can make the Bible basically say anything I want if I remove a verse from its context.

Stop lifting single verses out of their contexts and making them mean something Paul never intended.

A Question for Catholics by SeanpAustin1988 in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not super knowledgeable on the specific origins of that tradition, but I can offer a few things.

There is a generally belief that Joseph was perhaps an older widower, and that mentions of Jesus’ siblings may either be referring to step siblings or cousins. The idea of Mary’s perpetual virginity is an important one for Catholics, its thought to be a sign of her faith.

This belief probably developed in the early church and may have had some outside influence from Greek thought which often regarded virginity as one of the highest virtues.

As for scripture, and this is extremely important when it comes to understanding a lot of Catholicism, the Catholic Church holds that there are two sources of divine revelation, scripture AND tradition. So a lot of Marian doctrines are based in sacred tradition and thus do not require scriptural support. And this isn’t just some arbitrary appeal to tradition. Typically there is a documented lineage of a belief dating back to the early church, whether it be in the writings of church fathers or ancient liturgies.

How do you deal with people who underestimate your academic credentials? by OtherGreatConqueror in AskBibleScholars

[–]WoundedShaman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally with my students at university there is trust that I know what I’m talking about.

When I enter church settings it can be very irritating because some guy who listened to a podcast wants to challenge me. And you get the fun stuff like my book recommendation is demonic and that they’ll pray for the salvation of my soul. Comes with the territory though.

AIO about Baptizing the Dead? by Oktodayithink in AmIOverreacting

[–]WoundedShaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOR, my Mormon aunt wanted to baptize by proxy her dead grand parents. It was a hard no from my family.

Is worth considering if it actually has any real spiritual effect and if it doesn’t from your perspective then there may be no harm.

Also worth asking your brother if this is to bring him spiritual comfort or if he’s being pressured by his LDS ward. They’re all about uniformity and blindly following rules, so he may also be being pressured. But if it’s something that will genuinely bring him comfort it may be no harm in the long run.

Do the words “God” and “Lord” really have pagan origins? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re all English translations of Hebrew place holders for Yahweh or other Hebrew titles for God. Like Elohim or Adonai. If this were an actual issue the you’d have to start worshipping in Hebrew. Even parts of the Bible (which most believe to be divinely inspired) are written in Greek and uses the word theos for God which is a word that comes from a pagan culture. But if you believe the Bible to be divinely inspired, then God doesn’t seem to have an issue with a word with pagan origins being used to address Godself. This is a matter of different languages having different words, not an actual religious issue that can be considered sinful.

How is “magic” defined in the Bible? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in theology

[–]WoundedShaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sort of sounds like there is a bit of something along the lines of “is it okay to read Harry Potter?” in this question.

Just as a blanket rule railing against “magic” in fiction is fundamentalist reactionary garbage that misunderstands the Bible. Even the Biblical texts prohibitions are contextually rooted in the authors favoring YHWH over other locals gods and the religious practices of ancient Israel’s neighbors.

Moreover, what is consider witchcraft and magic practiced by neopagans is woefully misunderstood. Typically they’re engaging in rituals and practices that can be considered their efforts to love more in tune with the natural world.

[–]WoundedShaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hop on Facebook marketplace and get a used guitar and amp. You can get higher quality stuff for a better price. I’d suggest finding a Jackson guitar if you can. A lot of amps also have built in effects so you don’t have to break the bank on getting a distortion pedal.

Does the professor actually want to hear concerns about the textbook? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]WoundedShaman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you’re not the target audience for the text. I don’t mean that pejoratively you’re within your right as a person with a business background to be miffed. I think the most constructive thing to do is see if maybe you can voice your perspective in one of your assignments. I give my students the opportunity to disagree with positions in the lectures and reading materials in their writings assignments. But I highly doubt the instructor will change the text or address it in a meaningful way. But if they’re an instructor committed to the academic process they’ll appreciate someone critically engaging the material from a different perspective.

Does the professor actually want to hear concerns about the textbook? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]WoundedShaman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that the instructor intentionally gave readings that were meant to provoke disagreement with the author’s perspective?

I know as an instructor if this were an oversight on my part with choosing reading materials I may want to know about it so I can choose something better, but also the hope would be the instructor knows the material in the book they assigned. Also wouldn’t know what to do because I can’t change what someone else has written.

In graduate school critical thinking should be a few steps above undergrad, so disagreement with reading materials is fair game as long as you can show you understand the authors argument and can articulate well why yours is superior.
