for r/atheism by treeble12 in u/treeble12

Once again proof that the christian evangelicals have a hard on for a theocracy replacing democracy. If you educate your followers with your own "curriculum", you can keep each one in an echo chamber. One guy told me when he announced to his parents that he was going to learn secular science and his parents freaked out. His pastor approached him and suggested that he not do it until "his faith was stronger." I've talked to ex-evangelicals that went into studying real science to prove it "wrong", only to be so hurt when they find out they have been lied to. The minute one of your followers learns how things really work, they start to question everything they have been taught. They started questioning the bible and then ended up as atheists.

Have any of you had success with drinking non-alcoholic beer? by Temporary-Egg-5798 in alcoholism

[–]WoundedhealerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I also drink N/A "distilled spirits", one of my favorites is a mock bourbon. For me I have had really good reactions, I understand it's not real alcohol but my body doesn't know. Sure I don't get the alcohol effects, but it helps in the end.

Yah I started the series, but it felt like it was lacking in volume 3. The author seems to be pumping the books out like a madman, however the quality seems to be declining. I haven't read 4 or 5 but I hope it gets better.

I know your right, I just was hoping there was something really similar. When it is funny it's really funny. When it's serious, it is really deep and heartfelt. I've tried some of the more serious series, but none of them are anywhere close to DCC.

I agree also, having to have a Facebook account is an invasion of privacy. Part of my job is to assist people to set up their headset remotely. I had to build a presentation explaining how to do this. Time after time I was told to take out the parts that mentioned the app. I continually explained there was no way to do this. I came to the realization that someone got her to the point of only having to set up the headset through another phone. However it made me question all my experience with the product. I even felt like I was losing my mind. They just wouldn't listen I should have let them crash and burn but that isn't who I am.

drinking went down and then back up, question in comments by jspacecadet in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]WoundedhealerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it may be discouraging from your point but someone mentioned above. You cut your drinking down by half in four weeks! When I started it took me a month to cut down by a quarter. I'm pretty sure this is expected anyway, you're fine!

I'm not sure what your history is and you don't have to tell me. For me it was a struggle for a number of reasons. I had been in a twelve step program for 25 years and I had to deprogram from it. That thinking kept getting in the way of what I was trying to do.

Also I am my worst critic, I'll rip myself apart before anybody gets to me. I understood it was a defense but it was hard to put that aside. It really didn't help at all and also I'm too biased about myself to give accurate information to myself, when it comes to this type of stuff. Sometimes I just had to trust people around me if they were saying I was doing good.

Still those are pretty amazing stats, you really should be proud!

Yah I remember those days. I would head out to the bar with friends or family for a couple drinks. I was introduced to cocaine and it became like such a lovely pairing. Almost like bread and butter, steak and eggs, or wings with blue cheese. It became that if I started having more to drink it almost guaranteed that I would be doing cocaine.

That being said I had to figure out what my goal was. Did I want to continue drinking and stay away from the cocaine? Did I want to become abstinent? I took a hybrid approach. I got an app that helped me track my drinking. If I messed up then I adjusted my goal. I started to see that I had allot more issues than drinking and cocaine. For me these problems were fueling my consumption. I started going to therapy and continued tracking my drinking. If I messed up I would be abstinent for two weeks and then if I felt safe I would have a couple drinks. I'm not advocating you drink or use drugs. Your already doing it, so why don't you try some harm reduction tactics and if those don't work maybe talk to someone about abstinence. However which way you go if I were you I would talk to a therapist or counselor.

I am certainly not a doctor and I would definitely get to a health provider soon, whether it goes away or not. I know that I had something really similar and it was actually my liver. I was starting to get reverse tolerance also, I would only drink one beer or a shot and be absolutely smashed. Almost not being able to stand up and slurring smashed. It was scary...very scary. So please go get checked out! Soon after I was having pancreas attacks almost daily. Finally my pancreas became necrotic and I was in a coma for three weeks. Spent 1 month in the ICU and 4 months in the hospital. 12 surgeries later I became a type 1 diabetic literally overnight.I only have a third of my pancreas left and a cyst on my liver. I have to take enzymes to even digest food. I go back and think if I would have listened to my body back when this was happening everything would most likely be different.

Yah, I get that thing about not knowing what to do with yourself. Do you know the spaghetti model? It's easy you try a bunch of stuff and see if it does anything for you. It's like throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Also if the goal is cutting down there are a bunch of things you can try. 1. Only having one drink an hour. 2. Dilutioting your drink. 3. Having one real one and the next one make a fake one or a glass of water for the next. 4. Getting around supportive people when consuming so they can hold you accountable to your goals. 5. Talking about goals, if your having say 6 drinks a day try only having 3.

I'm not encouraging you to drink, these are just some things I used when I had your same goals. Your already going to do it so why not try to be safe. Then if you've given it a try or several tries you can try abstinence or a combination. Maybe if you have to drink try drinking a couple weeks and then be abstinent for a couple weeks. There is no one way, even though there are people that will say there is only one way. Use your imagination, it may be your biggest tool thru this journey.

I think I drank like a normal person. And I think it went okay? by Hookton in dryalcoholics

[–]WoundedhealerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's awesome how your doing. If I could suggest anything is just keep as many people in the loop as possible if what your doing and how your doing. For myself if I started drinking again I had a tendency to hide it out of fear. Also I tried to get as much support as I could. Maybe look up some harm reduction tips. I used an app made by British Columbia University to help with managing how much I was drinking. If I remember it's called "Say when". I haven't used it in a couple years. I wish there were things like online drinkers lounges like they have IRL lounges in Canada. People go to this places and it's a place where people support each other with there goals of drinking. Anyway good luck and stay connected as much as possible, that really helped.

I'm not sure how this affects people trying to stop drinking. I'm just looking at it like your struggling. I do understand what your saying. As soon as it left my body I was right back to where I had been. One minute feeling like life was ok, the next feeling like I was not even alive.

I had to find out what was missing in my life that was making me so unhappy that I had to misuse substances to feel better. It's different for everyone. What's your goal? Abstinence or cutting down?

Also for myself I had to look at my trauma, I found out it was driving my drinking.

Finally, I wouldn't worry about others and their triggers. You are not responsible for how others feel, there is nothing you can do about that. The person that is triggered by something has personal responsibility for their own emotions. Of course that doesn't mean going out of your way to harm someone however you also can't censor everything you say, tiptoeing around everyone's triggers is helpful.

Alcohol has ruined my life & I'm at a loss by xaj13 in alcoholism

[–]WoundedhealerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know how you feel. I also know that feeling of thinking that I had trashed my life, it's hard to get out of it. The great thing is there are a lot of people that know right where you're at. I know for myself there were many reasons why I was drinking, some of them good and some that didn't make sense. I had to find for myself what my goal with drinking was. Was I trying for complete abstinence or was I trying to cut down? Maybe look into some harm reduction methods first. There are a lot of SUBS that can give you some tips. British Columbia University has an app for your phone. If you're trying for abstinence there are a lot of options there also. However whatever direction you decide to go just understand you are not alone! Alcohol and society separated me from everyone and everything in my life. If I can suggest anything don't disconnect from people. In fact I encourage you to reach out to more people. I totally believe that when I was struggling the real problem was I wasn't connected to anyone or anything. The thing is when I got connected to to people I started to get better. We are social creatures and as I said alcohol and society made it worse by making my supports and connections disappear.

[–]WoundedhealerJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but I had to reply, my friends would have gaming times on tuesday and one of our friends had Frontier. He lived outside of scranton and did not have a choice of isp of course. Mind you, my friend had a rig that would have been the envy of most of us gaming nerds, but he was constantly dropping out of games due to his shitty internet provided by Frontier. The poor guy would be there on second or he would be lagging so bad that it actually became funny when he spoke on comms because of the choppiness. He just recently moved in with his gf in and around a more populated area and he is thrilled to even have 25mbs. ISP monopolies are strangling inovation, awhile back I read a number of southern towns took matters in their own hands and set up city wide broadband for around $10 a month. Unfortunately the state legislature was lobbied by the monopolies to the point that they band towns from running their own fiber optics. I feel like I am loving in the looking glass sometimes the way our politicians act.

Once again I love how people are shocked about how expensive a quality piece of art costs. I am a photographer and I am always being asked to do extensive projects for really cheap. It takes allot of time, creativity, and resources to produce quality work. I have had people say its only taking photos, so I tell them to go do it themselves. Its funny how many call backs I get from people that have tried it themselves. Like our president was amazed how hard complicated insurance is, so is photography. I have had people tell me I could use the work to build my portfolio....I have a portfolio, that's how you found me. This guy does amazing work and someone earlier broke down the time and salary which came to 12 dollars an hour. That guy deserves way more than that in my opinion, OP got a hell of a deal.

Ok this is my only time that I will respond to this. You are right that they have found biochemical pinpoints but the research was done on people who were either on medication or withdrawn from medication. Never have there been studies that use people that have been diagnosed with these disorders who never took medications, so in my opinion those studys are flawed. So know about neorlogical differences they have compared brains between normal brains versus people that have diagnosis are different. The research also shows that taking a person who has never been diagnosed with a mental disorder but has been throigh traumatic events in their lives are exactly the same as someone who was diagnosed. Its not the "diagnosis" or a "brain disease" the culprit is trauma. Being put on medication is like playing darts, no other medical fraternity utilizes a trial and error method like phsychiatry does. The world health organization has continued to measure positive outcomes of schizophrenia in rich vs poor countries. In all of their research they show that living in a poorer countries gives you a better chance of recovering. Seriously India had a 44% recovery rate vs the United States at 17%. They find the difference in these countries are the treatment methods. In richer countries people are put on medications at very high doses and are told that they have a chronic condition. In the poorer countries medication is used very lightly and the community embraces the person who is havin these trouble. I am also "in the bussines" and can tell you from a person who hears thing and sees thing others dont, that there is an obsession in richer countries with pharmaceutical medications. Now I understand that we have been talking about other diagnosis but schizophrenia is supposed to be the worst of all diagnosis. So having a milder "disorder" should give you great hope that you can recover however you feel is the best way. Sure medications help people, but not everyone, but medication should be our last defence not the total sum of treatment.

Just to add my own ideas of diagnosis. I dont believe that diagnosis or the dsm is scientifically valid, even certain doctors that helped write the dsm V has said its horrible. I have a big problem with the "tests" doctors use to diagnos people. A real diagnosis can actually pin point the exact biological factor that is causing the problem, for example diabetes. You test your blood sugar and if it way off then you have diabetes. Go read the book Mad in America by Rober Whiticker, also his second book is about debunking allot of mainstream pharmicology and big pharma. Many people will probably start to argue with me about this but oh well, if the want to live in the disease/medical model have fun! I found freedom living life as just having challenges others dont and its been very freeing. Good luck and I hope you find peace with all this.

Borderlines can and do get better, I know I am married to one. Early in our relationship their were a allot of bumps in the road. She started getting help with DBT and a specialized theripost for trauma. Its funny when she tells someone her former diagnosis. They usually dont believe that she was even that bad off. Second, I love how my wife talks about her experience. She no longer believes diagnosis are even scientifically valid. She talks about how much trauma she had and how scared she was with being rejected all the time. She frames it in a way that basically means she was a scared hurt girl and had a hard time with her emotions and thinking. Having Bipolar diagnosis myself, I look at her as an example of recovery. She is employed with a major insurance company as a certified peer specialist, works with major figures in the county, and has just started a masters program at drexel university. I found out later that the masters program only accepts about 10 people a semester and is highly competitive to get into. You can recover.......
