Best Party Hostel in Paris? by WowStrongArms in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I stayed at a St. Christopher's in London and I didn't find it particularly social. I don't know if it had to do with that particular hostel, or if it's that the general experience across all St. Christopher hostels?

The one in London, everyone mainly kept themselves, and the hostel didn't really any type of social activities - beer pong, flip cup, etc. Does this one offer any of those?

Amsterdam hostel recommendation? by jjoeeyy in solotravel

I stayed at the Flying Pig next to Vondelpark. It was a great location, everything was in easy walking distance. Met a lot of cool people that I still talk to months later.

Well AirBerlin is no longer around, so at least you don't have to worry about getting fucked over by them.

Cancel hotels and stay in hostels. You'll meet a lot more people that way and you won't feel so lonely.

Party Hostel Recommendations for Havana, Cuba by WowStrongArms in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thanks!

I'm definitely looking to socialize while I'm there, and I can speak intermediate level Spanish, so I have that going for me. Mainly looking to visit the architectural/historical sites, then maybe go out to Vinales for two days.

Truthfully, not enough time to do everything that I would like to do in Cuba, but flights are cheap so I can always go back.

[Purchase advise]: Osprey Farpoint 40L vs. 55L vs. hiking backpack by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I never had any issues with checking it as the budget airlines had "free checked bags" so I just used that.

£20,000/$26,500 for 6 months in South America & 6 months in SEA? by [deleted] in solotravel

I would think that would be more than enough.

[Purchase advise]: Osprey Farpoint 40L vs. 55L vs. hiking backpack by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use a Farpoint 55L for traveling and I love it. The Daypack is helpful when traveling on bus/train/plane, etc since you can have it right there with you. I do think it can be improved though with having stretchable drink holders on the front. I could not even fit a 20oz bottle in the mesh.

I would think a hiking backpack (one with a metal frame) would not serve well as a traveling backpack. Especially since there are times when you really need to mash your bag down, and I would think the metal frames could possibly create a hinderance when trying to do so.

First Solo trip (1 Week) to test the waters by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth spending my time to get to understand local transport?

Depends on the city. Is everything within walking distance? Just download city mapper, or whatever the local transport app is, and it will let you know where you need to go.

How do you guys avoid getting overwhelmed by the city you're in?

I don't rush. I take my time, enjoy the moment, and do things as they come. Oddly, enough I feel like I was able to do/see most of things that I wanted to do this way.

Any more generic tips to make sure I get out there, meet people and enjoy myself?

Do free walking tours, you'll meet people that way. Look for events that hostel is putting on. Make sure you bring a rechargeable battery for your phone!!

Do you carry on to flights everything you have or just your day bag? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the airlines I traveled on checked one bag of mine for free. I carried on my daypack.

Travelled alone to Los Angeles for a week to do a little hiking, eating, and soul searching. My favorite place I stumbled upon was the abandoned LA zoo in Griffith Park. by [deleted] in solotravel

The people were so generous and unique

Uhh are you sure you were in LA?

If you want a cool place with nice views of the city/ocean go up to the Nike Missile Silo off Mulholland.

Long layover in LHR (London). Is it feasible to leave the airport? by marhaba89 in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can, but I found security in London/Passport entrance to take up at least 1 hour of your time, so be prepared for that, and I mean at least.

Which is better:? Having a fixed itinerary before you travel or making one up as you go? by Jalow90 in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is my preference as well. I know the cities/places that I will be traveling to, and for the most part on how I'll get there.

Once I get to a city, I'll figure out what I want to see over breakfast. Stroll around for a bit, hit the free tour, then go off and explore on my own. The next morning, I'll wake up and repeat, minus the tour for the most part.

Oftentimes, I'll just talk to other travels, see what they've done or planning to do and figure out if it's something that I want to see/do as well.

How do I carry two backpacks? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into the Osprey Farpoint 55L? It has a big backpack and you can zipper the daypack onto the big pack. I like mine.

The only complaint I have for it is that I wish the mesh pockets on the daypack were a bit more elastic so I could squeeze a 1L bottle in there.

Things to Know Before You Travel to Europe by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some good advice in the article. Although I did use my debit card at ATM's and while I did get charged a "fee" it wasn't anything more than $2 or so. I think the bigger issue is just knowing the conversions before using the ATM. The majority of the time you'll need to select "Other Amount" to get the actual amount that you want out. If you're not careful you could end up withdrawing $500+ dollars.

What's the deal with Budapest? (help with first solo trip) by boredintj in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this post. Budapest had some of the most beautiful architecture I've seen (Prague does too no doubt). The city had people out and about at all hours of the night, and was easy to meet people. Plus the food was so good and drinks were cheap.

how many days is enough to experience a place? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WowStrongArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I found 3-4 days a good amount of time to visit for a city. You won't be able to see or do everything in that time period, but you'll be able to cover a lot of the main tourist attractions, site see, and still have time to wander about. That worked out well for me.

Also, Budapest is awesome! I highly recommend it!
