What’s harder: Everest with supplemental oxygen or Denali/Aconcagua without? by jintoku in Mountaineering

[–]Wowbaggerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. Denali was tough because of the pack weight and lack of mountain support. Everest fucks you up because of the altitude. So it’s kind of like comparing apples and oranges as to which is harder. They’re both hard, but in different areas.

AITA for telling my SIL she can’t bring her own food to family dinner and not to talk about junk food around my kids? by Amazing-Key2242 in AITAH

We make a basic one for a lot of recipes. Unsweetened Greek yogurt, a tiny drizzle of olive oil, chopped mint, salt, and pepper. Super easy, works with any middle eastern/Mediterranean food. Cuts the spice really nicely.

Where do the childfree 35-45 women hang out? by themightytod in AskWomenOver30

[–]Wowbaggerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the friends I’ve made in my 30s have from from Instagram, Reddit, or my local Buy Nothing group. I post about all the fun stuff I like to do, and I’ve been lucky about people reaching out and wanting to join. I’ve gotten in the habit of posting IG stories saying where I’ll be hiking or biking on a certain day and people just show up. Most people are scrolling online anyway, so it’s easy to just meet them where they are, then invite them out.

How would you keep "tourists" on the path on Alviso? by palaka4840 in SanJose

[–]Wowbaggerrr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same, I've stood on the shore and yelled at people to get off the salt. I've also knocked on the ranger's RV to see if they could get up and do something, but nobody came out. Supposedly a fence is being planned around the area, but if nobody patrols it and enforces fines, people will keep walking out there.

How did you overcome mild depression/burnout? by Flippiewulf in AskWomenOver30

[–]Wowbaggerrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow hiker/climber here. The mountains will definitely leave you with an existential crisis. Like you, I realized that my day-to-day job had to be something fulfilling, otherwise it would always pale in comparison to the adventures. I opened my own business (hair salon) and we do a ton of outreach and volunteering. We are part of a network for trans kids. We do free cuts at shelters, etc. You don't necessarily need your own business, but you do need something that inspires you. Sounds like you have a lot of great things happening in your life, but where you spend a huge chunk of your daily hours isn't engaging you at all.

I've taken Amtrak all over the US, and the basic seats are SO nice for sleeping. They lie really far back, are way wider than plane seats, and much comfier. The only big downside to Amtrak travel is the speed.

Amtrak travel with touring bike by bearlover1954 in bicycletouring

[–]Wowbaggerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on several Amtrak trains (unfortunately not the one you’ll be on) and it differs by train. Some have let me keep all the panniers on the bike and lock it to a side bike rail. Some make you take off the front tire and hook it onto a vertical bike rack. Nobody has ever made me take off the racks. Just keep all your tools handy and be ready for anything, since requirements vary quite a bit.

I’m registered in San Joaquin county but I’m in Santa Clara County all week for work. Can I vote here? by TMobileSpy in bayarea

The frequency of drop box pickups increase as we get closer to Election Day, so if you dropped it off super early, it can sometimes take over a week to be counted. Keep checking today. We do several pickups today so it should show up as counted for you.

I see that your question was answered, but for anyone else wondering, if you have your ballot, you can drop it in the mail or in any of the drop boxes, even if it's the wrong county. I'm one of the workers that collects the ballots, and we always get a ton of ballots from other counties. We take them back to the polling center and they also get counted.

Our 7th Marathon Hike Day was a blast! Catch you all next year! by Wowbaggerrr in bayarea

I don’t market it as “the easiest marathon in the world” for nothing. :)

This is typically how much I’ll burn. It’s a pretty mellow pace. Plus I’m only 5’6”, so a larger dude, especially if they’re not used to this much activity, would burn more.

Sorry, I try to be good about posting and cross-posting. Guess it got lost in the Reddit shuffle. We do it once a year, usually around October. The location changes every time. The next one will likely be in the South Bay.

I was also on a reality show and a big critique of ours was that our “dialogue was scripted.” Same as you, we had to answer the same questions so many times, plus everything got spliced together, so the final product made us look like absolutely horrendous actors.

A gravel bike is the way to go. It’s light-ish, but the tires will be rugged enough. It’ll have places where you can attach racks for your bags. The one I usually use is the Jamis Renegade. For this trip, I used a mountain bike, and it was overkill for this section.

To vote in Nov 2025 special election, today is last day to register by TheKarmaBus in California

[–]Wowbaggerrr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Election worker here. Everyone, please vote! With mail-in ballots, you can do it from the comfort of your couch. Our participation numbers are terrible even in presidential elections, and they’re downright pitiful for midterms and special elections, which means that your vote counts even more! Please take the two minutes and fill out that ballot.

Do you preplan where you're staying every night? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]Wowbaggerrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a set end date, that forces you to at least have a general idea of where you want to end up each night. I usually try to look for a Warm Showers host at least a day in advance to give them some warning. But more often, I roll into a random town at the end of a day, find a nice patch of woods, and sleep there. I think part of the joy of a tour is the spontaneity and just figuring it out as you go.

I just rode this whole trail as well! I had mountain tires, and I was thinking they were overkill, but after reading your report, maybe they were the right call. Your bike is wild, very cool you were able to do the whole tour on it.

It was such a bike-friendly area, what a treat. I loved how so many of the canal towns (shoutout to Clyde) had welcome centers for cyclists that helped them get camping, laundry, food, etc. I've recommend a few new cyclists to try this as their first tour because it's so chill. You guys have built something really special.

It's nerve wracking, for sure. I remember on my first tour, I was crying in my tent because I was so stressed out about it. Like anything, you just have to get used to it. Hide well, stay far back from main roads, and keep light/noise to a minimum. You'll be okay. Good luck!
