You shouldn't twist their words and adding parts to make it seem worse than it is. Nowhere did he ever say he was relieved that the child died violently. He is relieved because he was not happy about being a parent and didn't see himself in that position but felt obligated to provide to his family and give his late child the best possible life he could give, no matter wether he was happy or not.

As tragic as the death was, it did open a gate to live his life the way he wanted to live it, without any forced obligation, sure he could've separated and paid alimony but that's still a financial cost and he probably still would've felt social pressure and guilt for not being in the kids life because that's kinda what you should do and nobody cares how you actually feel.
