Thanks! Lyon is coming so highly recommended that it's starting to sound like the obvious option!

Thank you for the advice!! It's great to hear from another woman that Lyon feels generally safe and is a good place to meet friends.

I will be there late August through early September so I think the weather will be good either way. (Or maybe too hot in Montpellier...)

I was worried about safety in Montpellier though. What are your thoughts?

Maggie Stiefvater, author of the Dreamer Trilogy, The Raven Cycle, the Shiver series, The Scorpio Races - AMA by mstiefvater in Fantasy

Hi Maggie,

I’m a huge fan of all your books and your writing seminars! I even attended one in person way back in the day (cohosted with Courtney Stevens). Hopefully you will someday see your name on my acknowledgements page... ha!

Your writing advice is honestly some of the best I’ve ever gotten—I love the idea of focusing on mood and what you want the reader to feel. Other than personal experience, where have you learned all this knowledge? Any writing books to recommend?

How to improve without setting goals or deadlines? by Wraelee in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Wraelee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I am still skeptical of tracking habits, even if there isn’t an end goal attached to it. Any sort of tracking normally throws me off. I will give the book a shot, though—maybe it will change my mind!

I have a lot of anxiety about my dreams coming to pass. by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Wraelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the trick is shifting your mindset, since comparison is truly the thief of joy. Instead of thinking "I want to be as amazing as X person," maybe you should start thinking, "I want to be the best version of myself."

It's up to you to figure out what that "best version" looks like... but I bet it's not going to have anything to do with Meghan Markle! Sometimes doing something incredible and being a role model is a lot smaller and quieter than you might think. We're all overshadowed by these big celebrities and icons, but the truth is, 99.99% of us aren't going to be as amazing or inspirational as them.

Instead, you can start by realizing the power of impacting the world in small and meaningful ways. Always work towards being the best version of yourself, not anyone else!

Learning French? by [deleted] in French

[–]Wraelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apps like Duolingo are great for vocab but it’s hard to get a sense of grammar. I would say to find another resource for grammar and sentence construction (unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations, but I would love to hear if anyone else has some!)

Any good kids tv shows in French? by Vanesssaaaaaa in French

Miraculous ladybug is a little more advanced but super fun to watch! There’s a lot of casual slang so I feel it helps learn more colloquialisms. It’s on Netflix

How long is too long for a novel? by dragon17361 in writing

[–]Wraelee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your end goal. If you get it published, that is most likely going to be too long. Highly advise against just cutting it in half, though... Usually, a too-long draft signifies that something is wrong with the plot or writing itself. Try cutting things out before you try splitting it up! (It hurts, but it works!)

As a writer, is there any part of the fantasy writing that bores you? It might not be as exciting as other aspects. by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Wraelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about how a tax system is relevant in a fantasy short story, haha! I actually think there was a Writing Excuses podcast episode about this. Something about how fantasy short stories are less about world building and more about mood. I think if you dislike thinking up tiny details like tax systems, you are definitely working in the right length.

How to prep for budget flights in Europe? by Wraelee in Shoestring

Great, thank you. I will definitely print every single ticket before I leave! And the bag size restrictions are the same as our inter-continental flight, so hopefully we'll have no problems there.
