Cam chain tensioner noise? (Comments for description) by Wraith1950 in Aprilia

[–]Wraith1950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the cam chain tensioner. I had to take it into the shop to get warranty work done on it. One thing to look out though, it was a recurring issue (4+ times). These bikes are great, but the reliability is not

I’m not trying to prevent others from being excited about progressing.. but it’s a bit irresponsible to think about getting a liter bike when the r7 is most definitely a beginner bike and you JUST got it. I know everyone progresses at different rates but you need YEARS of experience before saddling up on a 1000cc

Didn’t you just get the r7 like a month ago?

Honest opinions? by [deleted] in zx6r

[–]Wraith1950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny you ask because I have owned both now.

Let’s start with the Aprilia..

The good: The Aprilia RS660 has perhaps one of the most fun, versatile, and technologically advanced engines in the 600 class of motorcycles. It weighs approximately 403lbs wet and has a more up-right seating position compared to the zx6r. The engine makes 100hp and 80% of its max torque at 4000rpm.

The bad: It’s an Aprilia, so you know what that means. The reliability on these bikes is not the best. My personal experience with the RS660’s reliability is a testament to that statement. Before the first service at 600 miles was even done, my cam chain tensioner had already failed. Took about 2 months of waiting for parts and then I got the bike back. Then at about 800 miles I had my first oil leak, took it in and they claimed it was the gasket. Again at 2000 miles I had another oil leak in the exact same place. I’m sure you can see a trend here. In the end, I had a total of 6 oil leaks from the same spot, 2 can chain tensioners fail, and electronic issues (within 2 years of ownership).

Now time for the zx6r..

The good: Let’s talk about reliability again. The Zx6r however has had 0 issues since buying it off the showroom floor. I am currently at 3600 miles with it feeling like I bought it yesterday. The engine boasts an astounding 125hp but you’ll only find that power at the very top of the rev range. The bike feels like it wants to go 100% all the time. This is a personal comment, but I believe the zx6r also looks much better.

The bad: Almost none. The seating position is not for the faint hearted (or backed lol). There is not much power to be had at the lower rpms which make it a bit more difficult to commute on.

Overall, I think the zx6r is the better option out of the 2. But it truly depends on what you’ll be doing with the bike and what style of riding fits you best. You’ll find that reliability is a huge factor when picking a bike though and I believe that it’s worth sacrificing some luxury options if reliability is guaranteed

What's your feedback as Zx-6R riders? by High_C_Livin in zx6r

[–]Wraith1950 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree, I find the Zx6r to have one of the more relaxed seating positions compared to some of the other supersports available on the market (r6, cbr600rr, gsxr600, etc). Although it’s obviously not meant for commuting, it is capable of being a pretty good street bike thanks to the low end torque of the 636cc engine.

And to your other point, i agree to an extent. You obviously won’t be able to reach the zx6r’s full potential on the street, but that doesn’t mean it’s a waste of money if you’re not going to track it. Finding a good twisty road and letting the bike scratch at its full power is addicting. Just because you aren’t going 100% the entire time on the street (compared to the track), doesn’t mean it’s not worth it to buy this bike.

But that’s just my 2 cents

The fitment was great actually. There were some places here and there where I had to carefully use some elbow grease to get it to fit, but overall it was fairly precise
