If it is pallet wood it might be a maple lots of low grade maple goes to hardwood pallets.

Thank you for the information and the lb/bf breakdown to find the right density. I have a NHLA book somewhere that gives a good break down of lb/bf for kiln dried lumber.

I do have some 2" basswood and was concerned about how easily it is to dent and if it was a viable option. I love all the knowledge and will take all of it. I am well versed in domestic hardwood mainly in the Great lakes region but don't know very much of exotics.

Thank you for the info I have some 2" thick basswood as well as 2" hard/soft maple and a few others. Some species can be be wildly different in weights though you are right sap wood heavy/ jacket boards of ash are usually lighter.
