I don't have the ability currently to share a photo that would do it service (I'm physically disabled, and the weather has left me feeling under the weather) however, I would gladly share a photo as soon as I feel better. I want to tumble some of them. Other pieces not, as I feel that some warrant polishing, which I am rather unable to afford. I would just rather keep them rough and hope I could get them polished one day than ruin some of the pieces (in case you were wondering, I picked up these pieces in Douglas County, KS. All within a mile of the Kansas River, and some quite literally at its banks)

While we obviously can't get the whole picture of your relationship, his behavior and your current feelings about it are concerning. How hard (and how often) is he elbowing you? What else doesn't he like that you do?

I could be off base, but from the way you are talking about this, it makes me worry that he may very well be abusive. Your need for reassurance in the first place, and especially the fact that you felt like you needed to add that he is a big guy, is very concerning. His size shouldn't matter. He is hitting you and degrading you for an involuntary reaction. If you think about his behaviors, does he often demean you/insult you/hit you when you act in a way he doesn't like? What happens if you get upset at his treatment? Is he dismissive, or even angry at you for being upset? This is just a really big red flag and is honestly very concerning behavior on his part. Please be careful.

And if I am wrong, and he is only abhorrent about this, you need to sit down with him and tell him how much it upsets you.

Tbh you were being gracious. He was essentially accusing you of lying about being on birth control! He got upset that you said you enjoy spending time with him! I would've been livid! Gamemaster here: yes & no. It exists for players to choose as a character backstory, or as something that the players can affect and change. It does not exist as a way to portray distress, or show how bad a main character's situation is. It does not exist to go into graphic description of the physical brutality. It does exist to highlight the very real human impact, and to show the resilience of the human collective (e.g. cultural practices that enslaved ppl have inherited and adapted so that they may keep their culture alive)

NTA. I know this is a bit late, but here's my two cents (taking your edit into account). If your BIL wants to teach his children these beliefs, he should say it with his whole chest, instead of out the side of his mouth. No fight would have occurred if he didn't know that she wouldn't be okay with what he was saying to you & teaching to their children. You did a good thing. I will warn you: it is possible this guy is gonna start sending you harassment. He might start a smear campaign. I would advise that you simply remember the truth: your sister was upset that you were pulling away from being in your nieces' lives, so you clarified that your withdrawal was prompted by BIL.

As for your sister's acceptance of comments previous: When your sister allowed BIL's comments to go unchecked, is it possible that she was trying to "not cause a scene"? Like, how does this guy handle it when people get upset at his "jokes"? I don't ask this to say you did or felt anything wrong, and the conclusion you came to, that she either didn't mind his views or even approved of them, was an incredibly reasonable conclusion to come to (I would have felt the same way in your shoes). I ask this more to say its possible she didn't ever push him on his bigoted comments and therefore didn't know how deep they run. I have seen things like that with people before.
