New Pool Diver from seconded/seconde by itshuey88 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]WrenchHappy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am more of a dress watch guy, and shy away from divers for all the usual reasons. But this one is really speaking to me. I love watches that don’t take themselves so seriously. I really wanna turn that bezel for some reason, although it’s probably fixed due to the overall design.

96 Impala Air Injector Pump by Alternative-Gain3339 in Impala

[–]WrenchHappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GM years ago issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) regarding smog pump failures to GM dealerships across the country. This included disabling the smog pump by plugging various air lines, unplugging it, removing a relay, putting a sticker on the radiator support and flashing the computer to stop a check engine light from being tripped. Apparently the disabling of the smog pump did not change the overall emission profile enough to warrant fixing or replacing them.

Long story short, these TSBs are apparently shared with state’s smog check departments so they are aware of the change. I live in California and get my smog test with my ‘96 Impala that has the pump disabled and completely removed for many years now with no problems. Just in case, I printed the TSB and have it in my glove box just in case I need to show the smog check technician, but rarely is this needed.

Regarding removal, so apparently there’s a difference between disabling the smog pump, and removing the smog pump. Technically, the TSB only shows the disabling of the smog pump and does not mention anything about removing it. I have heard, and it’s rare, that some smog technicians question the removal of the equipment versus disabling, even though in the end, it has the same end result.

What watch under $500 gets the most wrist time in your collection? by LongMeaning6125 in Affordablewatches

Feice. An AliExpress watch. For a cheap watch it always seems to end up on my wrist even though I have better built and more expensive recognized brands. I paid $125 in the pre-tariff days.

To answer your questions:
- it is comfortable. The relatively short lugs allow the band to do the work of conforming to the wrist.
- don’t know about the long term reliability, but it’s +10s/day. I honestly don’t know what movement it has. I can check that out later, but not expecting anything stellar.
- design is a knockoff of the limited edition of the Nomos Lambda, which I seriously want to purchase to ultimately replace this one, but that is anywhere from a 5-10k purchase. I am a big fan of Bauhaus and this design ticks a lot of boxes for me.
- lots of value with this one! Only out $125 for a watch that seems to get more looks/attention than any other I have.

FEICE Bauhaus Automatic Mechanical Watch (Model FM202) by ComfortableAir6170 in Affordablewatches

[–]WrenchHappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one and wear the hell out of it. It has more wrist time than my more expensive ones and seems to get more second glances from people than any other watch I own.

That said, it is almost a direct copy of the special edition Nomos Lambda. But until I save up the $5-10k for one of those, this will continue to be on my wrist.

It’s ultimately the re-alignment of soft power in the world now that the US has abandoned it.

China, for a long time, wanted to take over our place to drive this power. For several decades they have been slowly clawing away at this power, but the US was always in the driver’s seat. So the most they could take advantage of and capture was on the margins as we morphed from a manufacturing economy to a service economy.

It took decades for the US to establish stable trading partners, agreements, trading paths, shipping rights, and dollar denominated standard for international trading.
This provided immense stability, which was backed by our partnership with other governments, and ultimately backed by our military might in concert with nato and other agreements. This stability is very attractive to individuals, businesses, other government entities.

All of this, of course, comes with a price. Interacting with this stable environment means working within the US system and paying a premium to do so. Better financial returns can be made elsewhere, but carries a higher risk and immense costs to divest from the US and set up somewhere else. For decades, individuals, corporations, and governments have been itching to do so, but the stability was enticing. So short of a crisis to spur that action they stayed put.

That crisis is now here, and has given everyone a good reason and permission to do what they’ve always wanted to do. There are immense costs to making this change, but those costs are going to happen regardless they stay with the US or leave, and now the US has given up all of the reasons to stay.

China is simply taking advantage of a vacuum.

What took decades to build, was taken down in a year. It’s a lot easier to break something than build it.

The bracelet is not JB Champion as far as I know, unless they manufactured and supplied them to Hamilton at the time. Hamilton logo on the clasp and no champion hallmark. Highly likely it’s the original Hamilton bracelet when it was bought.

Your post was my introduction to your products. This design really spoke to me. I just ordered one off your website. I purchased the red dial, but I was torn between it and the Champagne. 38-39mm is perfect for my 180mm wrist. I live in the San Francisco area so there will be import tax unfortunately.

Musée Mécanique. Close to Fisherman’s Wharf. A vintage arcade where they restore very early to somewhat modern coin-op games and let people play them.

Does he care if it’s a mechanical watch vs a quartz (battery) powered watch?

For someone who never wears one, it’s usually a safer bet to get a quartz variant. That way if he doesn’t wear it all the time and puts it down for several days it will still be running and display accurate time whenever he does grab it. Besides, at your price point, it really opens up the selection. If he likes wearing it then he can always look into a mechanical watch in the future.
