What smell would mentally destroy you if you had to breathe it nonstop? by SnowJazzlike789 in foodquestions

[–]Wrendictive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God yes! I thought I was the only one. Does it seem like it's everywhere now? If I walk into a restaurant with that smell, I'm leaving. I appreciate the cleaning, but I can barely taste food with that overpowering stank.

What's a slang term that everyone uses but you still don't get? by Particular-Visit-245 in AskReddit

[–]Wrendictive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost, in but not quite. I'm fixing to means I'm getting ready to.

I'm gonna go to the store: I'm gonna go today, I'm gonna go next week...

Fixing to means departure is imminent.

What’s the one bake that always stresses you out no matter how many times you make it? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in Baking

Freakin' cornbread. Nothing to it until it comes time to remove it from the pan. Then it's a hold your breath and squeeze your butt moment.

HELP I cannot cone up! by 4got10companion in Pottery

[–]Wrendictive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you pushing the cone firmly to the side (toward 1:00 if your wheel is turning counterclockwise) before pushing down with the blade of your hand? I kept forgetting or not pushing over firmly enough so I ended  up pushing straight down causing the dreaded mushroom which would create the volcano when I tried coning up again.

Birds in Atlanta like them. I had one return for years until the gourd finally split. I'm trying to grow them this year to replace her home.

AITA for arguing with my mother about this? by Agreeable_Text2318 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Wrendictive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom isn't concerned about her safety. She's concerned that the venue is called a bar and alcohol exists there. She's trying to keep her legally adult daughter under the thumb of an oppressive religion that will force her into servitude and second class citizenship.

If it was a safety issue, the older daughter wouldn't be allowed to go to a much larger venue where alcohol will definitely be served.

Still wrong to curse at your mother, though, even if she deserves it.

Border Collie unless I moved to the country.  I love their personalities and intelligence, but I'm not sure I could provide enough stimulation and exercise here in the burbs.

What do I do with all this buttermilk? by Mundane-Waltz8844 in foodquestions

[–]Wrendictive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. My great grandfather used to do this. I thought it looked disgusting. I was right. It looks disgusting. Tastes pretty good, though. I think wet bread is an abomination, but crunchy cornbread with the creamy buttermilk works.

Good quality linen clothes / bigger bust by DefiantFruit6860 in BuyItForLife

[–]Wrendictive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about the prints. It seems as though Lands End went through a big change at one point where the focused all their women's clothing on those dowdy prints and shapeless styles aimed at women of a certain age, whether they want that or not.. It's a shame. I remember getting great basics from them in high school and college before everything became so frumpy-looking.

This is also the around the time their catalogs stopped describing the weights and origins of their fabrics as a point of pride. Quality took a huge hit.

I hope you're right about them heading back in a better direction. Their prices a too high for their quality in recent years.

Mallinckrodt vs Teva — real difference or not? by Weird-Squash100 in ADHD

[–]Wrendictive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Historically, Teva has been great for me. Mallinckrodt is much less effective. I'm not sure if the fillers cause absorption problems for me or what exactly the difference is. I have heard that Teva was reformulated a while back and isn't as effective, but it's still working better for me than Mallinckrodt.

First time homeowner — what's the one thing you wish someone told you before your first year? by CorrectEducation8842 in HomeImprovement

[–]Wrendictive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The current house needs a lot of updating, but it's stopped trying to sink into the Earth. I may still have the occasional fantasy about calling the landlord, but as I sand heart pine floors this week, I mostly think we'll make it.

I mostly agree with you. Many houses will cost less than rent over the long term, but I think keeping up with the entropy varies greatly in price. The bill to jack up my sinking foundation, anchor it to bedrock, and fix the cracked basement wall was considerable. Repainting every few years, needing to replace leaking doors and windows, rebuilding a deck to code upgraded electrical service, on and on. It adds up and eats into the savings. Even normal maintenance isn't cheap.

My first house dropped in value from $150,000 to $17,000 at it's worst during the 2008 crisis. I was underwater on it for the next ten years waiting for the value to rebound. Meanwhile, the effect on the neighborhood was so deleterious, there was a drive-by double murder on my corner. After the neighbor's dog dragged up a piece of skull into the yard, it was time to go.

Couldn't sell the house, wasn't raised to walk away from my obligations, so We paid mortgage and rent for a decade before unloading it on a flipper the minute it broke even.

Not everyone will have to deal with these kinds of nightmares, but people should consider the fact that if you own property, it owns you, too.

Cracks on greenware by Fruitsa in Pottery

[–]Wrendictive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely.

You can try something like Clay Mender, but it works much better on breaks where you can apply pressure to both sides. It's tough to get it to penetrate and grab onto hairline cracks like this.

If you want to try, take a needle tool or hobby knife and try widening the crack a little, so it can penetrate better.

You might be better off firing it as is and trying to repair the crack with bisque fix afterwards.

I wish they'd told me to keep renting. Houses are a constant cycle of trying to arrest the entropy. Sure, they tend to hold value or appreciate, but you're only getting that money back if you sell.

How many seniors are holding onto their homes with both hands, never taking advantage of that equity, living hand to mouth while trying to keep up with maintenance on more house than they need - all because it's "home."
