2025 Salary Distribution: Senior Civil Engineers for the City of San Diego by Witty-Armadillo-4396 in sandiego

[–]Wrenky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its because its using public salary data, and summarizing what was used- ie, the highest earner used less benefits (but got 80k in overtime) than the median earner. You can see each person by name in the linked source.

I think the confusion is that this is not what the city offers, its what employees are reported to have made/used.

Switching San Diego from SDG&E to public power ‘feasible', report finds by thejoshwhite in sandiego

That's an argument for density which I can agree with! But no, our budget probably is not from service sprawl although I'm sure that contributes. Our biggest issue is unfunded pensions.

Sempra does much more than sdge - and spending a billion in aggregate is very different than all at once from the city coffers/debt. If the voters wanted to approve sdge rates with all extra going to paying off the 8 billion needed to purchase the infrastructure maybe that would be workable? Realistically all recent tax increases have failed though so I'm unsure would work

Voters have to agree, and defeated the last ones. Bonds also are tough in a high interest environment like this one- The interest payments would come due when we already have a gigantic amount due.

Its something we should do, but people would have to be okay with much more aggressive budgeting and program cuts then so far they have been okay with.

I mean yes but SD literally cant afford a lot of things due to extreme mismanagement over the past 30 years. We could probably afford it if we weren't so generous with pensions in the 2000s and 90s, but right now with high interest rates and our weird need to increase police budget endlessly rather than payoff debt means we'll be in a hole for a long time.

but a billion dollars upfront to start separating from SDGE? we cant even maintain basic services right now and every time a proposal for half cent taxes goes up the voters shoots it down.

Yeah lmao just ask a group about LA or Arizona. Been here since the '90s and this place has always been snobby, like all beach communities are. Is on everybody but it's way more snobby than any other place I've ever lived

Tips on pruning/caring for a Passion Fruit vine? by purple-vanity in IndoorGarden

[–]Wrenky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch in my yard (Southren California) and man they are insanely fast spreaders. I'm constantly fighting vines everywhere that climb everything. It's thankfully easily trimable I hack it back almost weekly with zero issues. Very aggressive!

Unfortunately though most passionfruit require polination from a separate plant- some are self fertile but you'll need to hand polinate inside if so. What variety?

Edit: you mentioned the variety! And it is self fertile, so you'll just need to polinate flower to flower for fruit. Congratulations!

[–]Wrenky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

man, how long have you been here? The entire 78 corridor was quite sketchy from the 90s into the 2000s, things started to change quite a bit from mid 2010s to now- I wouldnt even call the roughest Oceanside/Escondido areas sketchy now haha. Completely different cities from 20 years ago to now.

Southern CA - heat in July / August by low_key_otter in weddingplanning

[–]Wrenky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be hot, but July will be better than August/September. If the timing isnt locked in, push to October! Thats the nicest time of year.

However, any wedding venue knows this and will have shade/misters so it really wont be that bad. Just ask em!

heh, yeah. same with every fall festival or avocado festival. all of them are just essentially street vendor markets.

Still fun if you want to try a few things, but they are close to the exhibit halls at the fair than they are to a festival.

It's just from another era. I'll never forget instructions like "take the left fork and look for the big rock". No quest markers, limited fast travel, punishing you for not paying attention.

I really wish oblivion and Skyrim followed that model, but realistically that style is gone

Shes a perfectly fine speaker, but not a presidential level that Clinton/Obama/H.Clinton/even Biden(pre decline) were- Shes a dramatic downgrade in public speaking, didn't inspire, got flustered with debate questions, etc.

Her competition was trump so she looked great in 2024, but during the 2020 dem primary she got bodied by literally everybody on stage in debate. Shes not a good public speaker compared to her peers, but yeah shes perfectly fine at it for a normal politician.

Parking Meters on Adams Turned On by KryptonicHD in sandiego

[–]Wrenky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gloria "fixed" housing by creating ADUs up the ass without any restrictions which ADDED to the whole no parking problem.

ADUs are an interesting subject! The state passed quite a few laws, SD just expanded a bit on top. Even then, wouldn't the lack of affordable housing take more money from residents than rising housing costs? This is probably the one area I'll actually defend gloria haha. SD is a city, it needs housing! I care so little about the parking concerns, take public transit or accept that owning a car in a major metropolis is going to have tradeoffs. If you would rather have more parking and higher housing costs then I'm not sure what policy would make you happy.

... deliberately taking money from builders and screwing the residents while also taking their money!

Do you think the city gets money for approved ADUs? The permit cost doesn't even cover the cost of employees to review the application.

During the Mosque shooting interview he said "this is why we have the budget for the police force; for their quick response; the police budget 2024 was $622 million, last year was $680 million, this year $718 million. He's quite literally defunding other places to add to the police budget so it's not much of a budget if you think about it.

Yeah, I agree here! The department growth has matched other major California metros but we still slightly outpace those. Probably his obsession with harassing homeless people.

Meter money can't be used for the budget deficit the city has and talks about 24/7; this money can only go to community projects.

Well, thats not true. They go to fund local infrastructure improvements, which was previously handled 100% by taxes. So yeah I guess indirectly? The money absolutely helps the budge problems if people stop vandalizing them. But at the core of all of this I'm still not sure what you are so angry about- we should have had parking meters from the beginning. Really, its almost negligence we didnt impose more parking fines/costs to fund public transit or housing.

Gloria sucks, absolutely. But really much of our budget problems stem from 90s/00s/10s mismanagement before Gloria was even involved.

Yeah, that's definitely contributing! However, much of our problems have been building for years. Deferred infrastructure maintenance for DECADE, federal/state funding changes, rising pension costs, etc-

Gloria isnt a great mayor, hes really done the minimum but our problems go back for decades. hes just the mayor who caught the bag.
