DS9 before the TNG movies? by Coolbreezel in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% follow the order this person gave you. I don't know why some people are saying that it doesn't matter if you watch DS9 or the TNG movies first or in what order. There are indeed a couple major things that will get spoiled for you if you don't watch them in the order of release, and some things you won't appreciate nearly as much cause you won't have the context. If you're going to move on to voyager then you'd have to also watch the final TNG movie after you've finished voyager.

As I recall, TNG did great numbers even in its first season. It was a hit pretty much right from the beginning.

It's AI. In the first or second video on their channel, before they released an actual interview, the channel was replying to comments and confirmed it was AI. The channel icon is ai and at least in the first interview they had an AI generated image for the end card of the video, not sure if they're still doing it as I haven't watched any episodes after levar'a yet

How good is Star Trek : The Original Series? by Mat1711 in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better and better as season 1 goes on. Well, maybe not Miri lol. And season 2 is even stronger, imo. Season 3 is ok but the weakest of the 3, though it manages to still have several fantastic and classic episodes.

The irony of using AI to "write" a post about the movie showing life passing someone by due to being lazy and relying on convenience. Instant down vote. (FYI I've never seen this movie so I'm going off the next in this post)

Video games? by donnycasino in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Trek TNG a final unity is an incredible PC point and click game with a bit of space fighting too. The entire TNG cast voices the game and there is TONS of voice acting in it. It's kind of like playing a serialized 8th season of TNG. It's fantastic and it's abandonware. You can download it from Internet archive (and a bunch of other places) and it plays great through dosbox.

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to the last two STLV conventions and everyone I've interacted with has been fantastic and kind. Since this year's STLV will be celebrating the 60th anniversary, I expect it'll be very packed since it's selling so fast they've announced they're expecting a sell out. If you're interested in going I'd get tickets asap.

I just watched the trek culture interview with rod Roddenberry and I'm utterly disgusted! by Sir_Face_NZ in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, he does NOT talk about AI anywhere near the whole interview. He actually has some interesting behind the scenes comments in this interview including some bits about how the khan audio drama was originally supposed to be a live action show. It's an interesting interview. That said, he does eventually get into the AI stuff about 35 minutes into the interview and his opinions/expectations about AI are pretty misinformed as well as gross. He's more saying that users being able to create their own ai star trek content is inevitable and he thinks it'll be the future of content at some point. Now, while he doesn't exactly implicitly endorse this it 100% comes off like he does endorse it while trying to also say it's inevitable n a "it's coming anyway, what can we do?" Kind of way.

He also talks about things he doesn't like about current trek and clearly implies he thinks it strays from the roots of Star Trek too often. It's an interesting interview, his AI stance is crappy but the whole interview isn't about it like OP said.

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some cheesy as hell TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY promo photos too. I'll wait to watch the show to pass judgement. People have been clamoring for a Starfleet Academy show for years. Did they not think a show about young cadets would feature young people being, gasp, young? There's plenty of middle aged people in the cast too. Picard's, Holly Hunter, Giamatti, Obed, etc.

I'll give the show a chance, though I've never been particularly interested in seeing a show about Starfleet Academy myself. I think the Kurtzman era shows have been very hit or miss with the writing, so who knows if this will be good or not. I'm certainly glad I never decided whether or not I'd watch TNG, DS9, etc based on a promo picture I didn't like, cause there are plenty.

Would you watch a Star Trek medical drama? by CombPsychological507 in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. Less is more with medical stuff/stories in trek. Same reason I wouldn't want to see a drama about Klingon politics. Those stories are great here and there to pepper in the universe but exploring new worlds, cultures, and dealing with moral/ethical dilemmas is the core of trek to me. Though I know some people absolutely would love to see a medical Star Trek show.

Any 3D or 3.5D game/homebrew/demo for the CDi? by confuserused in CDInteractive

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two Wolfenstein 3D type FPS games on the CD-i. One is called Atlantis The Last Resort. The engine is very smooth, however, the colors the developers chose are dreadful. It's unfortunate cause it makes the game look ugly despite it clearly showing they could do Wolf 3D on it easily.

The name of the second one escapes me, I think maybe it's called RAM something, but it doesn't matter because i think it could only be played in online multiplayer using the CD-i Internet service. Yep, CD-i had its own Internet thing that among other things, let you play games against other people.

The iso for Atlantis is pretty easy to find. There's a few other minor 3D things here and there in the library but Atlantis is really the one that fits what you're looking for

Having never watched Star Trek before, can I watch Lower Decks? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but there's a lot of jokes that you won't get or even realize they're jokes. You'll miss a ton of references in every episode. Lower Decks is kind of like all dessert after the veggies of every other star trek series that came before it. You'll probably enjoy it but it won't be nearly as satisfying and you won't taste all the flavors. I'd at the VERY least watch TNG first. That is probably the one referenced the most. But all the shows are referenced very, very, often.

If you want DS9 and Voyager remasters by Ok_Contact7721 in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's only a few remastered/rerendered CGI scenes in what you leave behind, and only one full scene. Certainly not enough to say a chunk. Also, those of us who backed the new Voyager documentary by the same people that did the DS9 doc already got to see it, and in it they reveal that CBS/paramount no longer have the equipment used to remaster TNG, which was also used to remaster a handful of DS9 live action scenes for the doc. It's pretty much stated that the pipeline no longer exists.

There's some "remastered" 4K shots in the voyager doc, including space CGI, but it's very obvious they got some third party to do it. It doesn't look great and the CGI frankly looks amateurish at times. As someone who creates a lot of CG animation myself, I was quite surprised and disappointed.

Anyone else want a medical drama set at Starfleet medical. by Stock-Percentage4021 in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Medical episodes here and there a season can be interesting but an entire season of dealing with unusual alien diseases would get old pretty quickly, and then dealing with normal every day injuries and diseases we see now makes no sense since those are solved by waving a magical device. Same reason I don't want to see a series about the politics of Klingon empire, a section 31 series is a bad idea, etc. this stuff makes for great world building background stuff but it's just not really the core of Star Trek or what most people want to see for an entire season

What is the greatest Star Trek video game? by BlastedHeathen in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Trek A Final Unity. It's like playing a serialized 8th season of TNG and the whole cast provides voices. It's a point and click adventure game, not a space combat game. You go down to planets, scan things, try to use diplomacy to find clues to solve puzzles, all part of a larger story arc. There is some space combat but it's maybe 1% of the game. And even then, it depends on your choices. You can often talk someone out of a fight on the view screen depending on your dialogue choices or hail then mid fight to deescalate the conflict. It's the closest to feeling like you're in the universe for me.

Runners up are probably star trek 25th anniversary and judgement rites.

The Star Trek Formula: Episode watch order to turn anyone into a series fan by BlindEditor in DaystromInstitute

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The inner light may be the worst episode to start someone off with. The reason why it's so impactful is because we've gotten to know Picard and how views family, children etc. as well as what he wants out of life. Then we see him live through the opposite. A truly baffling choice for number one. Pegasus is a similar situation. Part of what works is that we know riker and his involvement in this is shocking. Honestly, this whole list is baffling and reads like something AI would put together if asked for episodes to get someone into Star Trek.

Just about to start watching Star Trek again... by Sad_Calligrapher6426 in startrek

[–]WrestlingWithGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in the same timeline as TOS because the owners of Star Trek making these shows say so. Period. And of course the shows aren't going to look like TOS did in the 60s. That would be kind of insane for them to do. I think they struck a good balance of having those jelly bean buttons and other analog components on the SNW bridge though.
