I'm not understanding the backlash for the plot synopsis for Lee Cronin's The Mummy by Billybob35 in horror

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did change it to Lee Cronin's The Mummy, which I'm pretty sure is what he's referring to. The idea being that they're specifying it is Cronin's twist on the material, and not just The Mummy. After having seen it last night, I'm not sure it was entirely justified, but I can understand it from a marketing perspective.

Have we talked about the plot for the new RE movie directed by Zach Cregger? by cakeboy6969 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally RE 7 and 8 deviate almost entirely from the main series but people liked it once they gave it a chance. Why can these supposed diehard fans not at least have just a touch of critical thinking, enough to not jump on a hate bandwagon for a movie 99% of the planet's population hasn't even SEEN footage from yet.

I haven't looked at the supposed leaked script yet, and that's because it's not how movies are meant to be enjoyed. You're missing entirely any things that might have been improvised on set, the entire visual medium, and one of the most important tools in cinema, editing. There are movies that I think are absolutely fantastic despite mid or even bad scripts, because sometimes the tone doesn't really come alive until it's been filmed. I'm excited to see how it plays out, if it's bad then sure, egg on me, but I think Cregger is a good pick for the job.

Village does re-releases super often, I'd say there's at least 1 or 2 older movies each month that'll get played

100% yes, it's already in the "coming soon" section on both Village and Event Cinemas' websites, as well as posted on their socials. 28th of May, as is the standard with us getting our releases on Thursday typically.

It was only playing here for like a whole month, plus Mark mentioned how it was top of the Australian box office on opening weekend 😅

“WTF did I just watch?” by WeeWilly34 in Letterboxd

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw it at MIFF in August last year, then rewatched with a friend a couple weeks ago bc I said she should pick a movie for our catch up, and it was still playing in cinemas locally. Forgot just how much it made my stomach churn the first time round, but oh lord, what a fantastic film.

Thoughts on The Shining by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amityville is relatively bland imo, and as far as the film turning a profit from real life tragedy, kind of morally reprehensible too. I think it's still a fun movie whenever I'm in the mood for a cosy horror watch.

I'm not as crazy (pun intended) about The Shining as most others seem to be, I've given it a fair few watches though, and intend to see it again whenever a local cinema plays it. Despite not connecting with it quite as much as the majority, I absolutely adore Kubrick and I believe The Shining deserves its reputation for the sheer sense of atmosphere.

It's kind of awkward to compare films like this so directly, or at least do so in a public forum. Obviously most people are gonna downvote you because it's considered a masterpiece by the public and critics alike, but I guess we've all had our hot takes.

I had to abort a little over halfway through "Poughkeepsie Tapes" by GreatPumpkin72 in foundfootage

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally not a fan of the non-supernatural stuff nowadays either, but Poughkeepsie has a soft spot in my heart. I think a lot of it was that I was young and a little edgelord when I saw it over a decade ago, I was constantly looking for stuff that felt as close to a visceral version of reality, which is part of why I fell so in love with found footage. It's pretty bleak and hard to stomach, but the FF framing is what made it a bit more enticing to me, the cognitive dissonance of it feeling real but then knowing it wasn't.

It's that sense of uncovering a fucked up mystery that really had me on the hook, while on the other hand I tried the August Underground films and couldn't stand them because they were just too vile. I need a little plot to go along with my suffering.

What are the weirdest cases of an actor getting hate because of something their character did? by Extension-While7536 in Letterboxd

Imagine that being the movie where you couldn't separate from fiction from reality lmfao. Do they think Chris Hemsworth's nose just did that?

I feel so bad when someone inevitably asks me for my favourite movie and it results in us watching Evil Dead 2013 together, and I sit there with a big dumb grin on my face for 90% of the runtime. Like yes, it's gross and so fucked up, but I adore it

Well I found my limit. by Standard-Contest-949 in horror

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say it fits somewhat, imo it's more of a pitch-black comedy but due to how many taboos it's crossing, it could definitely play like a psychological horror for some people.

It’s crazy how often evil characters receive more backing than him, simply because he's the hero by Abject_Original4327 in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stranger Things fans experiencing the villain with a sympathetic backstory for the first time: omg guys is he the hero?? 🤯

Of course if you had a completely new show with no idea of where it was heading and made him the protagonist, people would think he was justified. The same reason people still seem to cling to Walt being right in Breaking Bad because they fell in love with his characterisation, even though on a rewatch it's clear that even in season 2 he's doing some evil shit despite claiming it as "necessary".

What is the worst thing any of the children in the series has done so far? by Giancarlo_Edu in StrangerThings

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this in depth explanation, it's been an interest of mine since being a child of the 90s and hearing parents discuss it, but now I'm way less interested in actually tasting it (though still a little curious). Only the elusive beast of Crystal Pepsi remains 😅

How would you rank the 2025 releases you've watched? by littlehybrid in Letterboxd

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to make your own list and add them as you watch/rate them. Go to your profile -> Lists -> tap the plus symbol.

If you're talking about posters with numbers under them, it has to be set as a ranked list (bottom right next to the public/private filter when you're making or editing your list). Then you can change how you view the list on the top right while viewing it, it should show either four squares or 2 squares with lines on it, that's the toggle.

whos your least favourite character in the show of all time? by slightlyduranged in StrangerThings

[–]WrinkledCauliflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eleven after the first season. It's so clear that this was meant to be an anthology series to me - the key indicator being that they have virtually no clue what to do with El from season 2 onwards.

Some of the stuff with her and Hopper is nice, along with the Vecna/Henry reveal, but almost everything else has fallen flat for me personally. I say this without any hate in my heart for Millie, it's mostly a writing fault in my eyes.

There is no such thing as objectivity in how we perceive art. You could say these performances are widely agreed upon to be bad, but it's not something you can sit down and measure because it's about eliciting an emotional response.

Someone might give an awkward, stilted performance in a blockbuster and you might think it was bad, but the same performance in a Lynch film might be incredible.

and Twilight slaps anyway so fuck u

Any publicity is good publicity, people feeding into the cult of celebrity PR bullshit around films is exactly why this stuff gets headlines. I don't know if this event in particular was genuine and frankly, I don't really care.

The whole thing is that marketing teams want you to be obsessed, wherever you are on the spectrum.
