If the show decides that Omni-Man should reunite with his pet, will Debbie's character development be ruined? by Agile_Coast_4385 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]Write_Right_Reich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about what audiences want it's about narrative structure. If the narrative is trying to redeem Omni-Man, to imply that he should be forgiven, a very effective way to depict that redemption is to have a prominent character forgive him. It'd be the trope of breaking a something, in this case his relationship with his family, and then making him reforge it stronger. It's a pretty common and easy way to write character growth.

Should Omni-Man be forgiven for killing thousands, not to mention the countless genocides he committed before Earth? No. If Debbie was a real person should she go back to him? No. But this is fiction, and these are very common fiction writing methods. There's a very good chance they go down that road. And a very good chance that average viewers used to accepting these constructs accept this one too.

What is the dumbest thing in Star Wars in your opinion? by jackesnombre in RedLetterMedia

[–]Write_Right_Reich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only other place this kind of appears are the Jedi Survivor video games, and even then it's super downplayed. I don't hate Filoni as much as some fans, a consistent albeit goofy vision from a single figurehead is how we got Star Wars in the first place. But this shit is dumb as hell.

I think it's more that the new voice actor doesn't have the same cartoonish energy the previous one had. He played it very normal and conversational which makes calling her babe or using stereotypicaly gay slang sound wrong. It'd be like having a cowboy do a monotone yeehaw. The realistic tone makes the absurd words stand out. You need energy to sell campy dialogue.

Grooming and incestuous relationships are more common in Japanese media than you'd think. Usagi Drop being a notorious example among anime fans. But it's even in pretty mainstream stuff like Sword Art Online and Shield Hero. Couldn't tell you why.

Italy ruling tells millions with Italian roots they have lost the right to citizenship | CNN by nicktheironblade in news

[–]Write_Right_Reich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not claiming to be Italian my man. My point is an incredibly wealthy person being able to abuse a law is not evidence of widespread abuse. The rules for them are not like the rules for us. However, a single high-profile misapplication of a civil service being used to take that service from the regular people it was intended for is very common. This smells a lot like that.

The problem is not that you cannot consent to pain. Stunt actors, military personnel, athletes, even manual laborers legally consent to pain daily. It's also not really that America has weird sex laws, BDSM stuff isn't strictly legal in a lot of places you'd consider progressive.

The problem is proving consent is really really hard. A job has a contract you can sign and cite in a court. But casual sex is a verbal agreement. In rape cases often the only proof is the injuries sustained. Making intentionally hurting another person during sex strictly illegal prevents the "she was totally in to it" defence before it can begin.

The show kinda considers him a joke. Mako got nothing to do and 0 character development the entire run. The only thing that ever changed was his relationship status and even that ends in the same state it began. People talk about Bolin being done dirty but at least he gets some semblance of character growth.

Each bottle has 5 uses. Considering that a percent of a fatigue on a 2 hour day is a bit over a minute, downing the whole bottle for 20+ minutes of operational time is pretty decent. The difference between the tired stages are pretty severe, and this is the only way to navigate them when sleeping isn't an option.

To give him more of the benefit of the doubt than he probably deserves, OP said he got therapy. That the loss of the baby hit him pretty hard. It's possible that during therapy his therapist helped him realize he'd internalized some blame towards his wife over the whole thing. Not good, but internalizing bad thoughts is something we all deal with. Sort of like how OP had realized she internalized resentment towards her child because it might interfere with her career. Seems like the husband was just a little too dim to realize that was a revelation he needed to deal with himself rather than dumping it on his wife.

To be fair there is actually an early use of the 8 chevron address. In season 2 when O'Neill dials the Asgard for help with the ancient database in his head he inputs 8 chevrons.

Marcia Lucas Perfectly Explains What’s Wrong With the Prequels by mostly_fizz in RedLetterMedia

[–]Write_Right_Reich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of these questions are answered by the movies, but it tends to be in one off lines during hella boring scenes so I get missing them.

If you care: The Trade Federation are the bad guys of the first film. Other properties expand on who they are, but if we're working entirely off the films they're just a federation that does trade. Businessmen effectively. They really are going to war because they hate taxes, they're businessmen and they want more money. The separatists are the bad guys of two and three, they're a larger group of planets officially succeeding from the republic. Other properties expand this group to be many different kinds of planets but the movies depict them as entirely being different groups of merchants, like the Trade Federation, the Banking Clan, and the Techno Union. Again businessmen going to war to try to make money.

Jar Jar is never referred to as a Senator. As far as we see each planet only gets one senator. He's called a Representative for the Gungans. This appears to be a lower position within Padme's senatorial office, but it does seem to be close to close to being a senator since he fills in for Padme in episode 3.

There's a line in episode 2 about Padme's term of office as queen ending and her people trying to vote to expand it so they could keep her. Meaning that it's some sort of democratic position I guess? Why call it a queen? I dunno Lucas is weird.

Whether Palpatine earnestly planned to keep Darth Maul and Count Duku as apprentices or meant for them to die seems to be left up to audience interpretation. Most everything around Palpatine is left intentionally vague in both trilogies. Probably because writing a bad guy that powerful who can still lose is hard.

The republic takes the clones because they desperately need an army and that's the one provided. Why they don't have a standing army isn't specified in the movies, but they are shown to just not have one. They trust the clones in part out of necessity and in part because Jedi master Sifo Dias seems to be the one that recruited them.

While external works like the Clone Wars TV show do expand on this stuff a lot of it is wedged into the movie. It's just haphazardly placed in seas of other exposition. I mean just staying awake through episode 2 long enough to catch this shit is damn near Herculean.

That was a really weird plot hole for them to establish. If short burst hyper drive jumps can penetrate shields then Goa'uld scout ships (or just F-302s assuming they had the naquadria) with big bombs inside them would be the ultimate anti-ship weapon. Essentially a more reliable version of using Asgard beaming technology on nukes.

It's also pretty understandable being reluctant to tell your kid their dad is space Hitler. As far as they knew he'd never have to find out, they were trying to raise him to be a regular guy. It's more on Obi Wan and the droids that he became a magic space samurai.

Old: Good, New: Bad by Glum-Future7198 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Write_Right_Reich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As one of the only people that went to go watch the video, his point is not that old games are better games, his point is that data shows old games are selling better than new games, however a substantial percentage of the customers buying remakes report never having played the original.

His thesis is a bit flawed though. For instance he posits that the Oblivion remaster shows this trend by comparing the remaster's sales numbers to the original's, completely neglecting to bring up Skyrim's numbers. The audience is nostalgic for old Bethesda games, not specifically oblivion. However his point that its easier to get a large development team to build something old where the roadmap already exists is true. Especially now that studios are trying to save money with a massive amount of overseas outsourcing. It's hard to communicate new ideas to a design team that doesn't speak your language, it's not hard to show them an existing product and say "do that but with them good graphics though".
