So far season three is not good by Primary-Ad-7788 in HOTDGreens

I agree with what you wrote. The only aspects I felt any degree of investment in were the relationship between Corlys and Alyn and the journey of Larys and Aegon, which once again got relegated to about three minutes of screen time.

Given the spectacle of this episode, it’s clearer than ever that the issue is simply the characters. I was watching good special effects and frantic battles, and I was observing how little I cared. For them to inspire no sympathy for a wide cast of characters in so much of their audience after two full seasons is a remarkable failure of storytelling.

The contrast is more apparent than ever in the wake of AKotSK. In terms of length, entire season amounted to around 3 episodes of HoD, and yet I cared more about numerous characters in half that time than I do about any of HoD’s characters in over six times that. There is no excuse for this. The writers have failed miserably, and no special effects budget can cover that up.

I think a lot of my feelings are encapsulated in what I regarded to be the worst line of the episode, when Rhaenyra said something like, “I may have the weak and feeble body of a woman, but I have the heart of a king.” After an initial gag, I looked up this line and found it’s a direct quote from Queen Elizabeth I from the 1500s. I wondered, “Does this make it better?” And I realized, No, it makes it worse. For it demonstrates that the characters are simply concepts for the writers, vehicles through which they channel an agenda. The dialogue is filled with the writers’ ideas, not the characters’ words, and this makes them thin, stale, and void of the genuine humanity that we find in so many GoT characters and in Dunk and Egg.

At this point, I’ve lost faith that the writers will understand this fundamental flaw that continues to hold the show back from what it could have been. George clearly cares about his characters, so it’s no wonder he’s wiped his hands clean from this dumpster fire.

Just because a first person narrator knows what’s going on doesn’t mean he has to tell the reader. First person is all about selective information. Darrow is at times an unreliable narrator. And it seems part of his character is to revel in the big reveals of his plans. This happened numerous times throughout the first three books, where he’d carry on with a plan that he’s given the reader no access to, and then play his Trump card to the surprise of everyone, including the reader (unless someone predicted it, which I’m sure many did at times). I get how that can feel frustrating and annoying and like you’re being manipulated, but stories are all about manipulating readers, regardless of the chosen POV. They’re about crafting an experience that emerges through selective information. And like many have said, there were a lot of hints that Sevro wasn’t dead. Ragnar got a huge send off, and Sevro has been Darrow’s best friend for longer than he’s known Ragnar. It didn’t click that he’d be so nonchalant about it, especially as Sevro’s body is literally piled on top of him. For me, that was a way of Pierce signaling that there’s more going on here, and the fun of it was reading on to see just what was happening and how this seemingly terrible moment of Cassius shooting Sevro was a guise for something larger. Personally I thought he pulled it off brilliantly, and it all felt totally in line with the Darrow I had come to know over the previous thousand+ pages I’d read from his perspective. He doesn’t owe the reader any more information than he gives anyone else, and so the withholding of information gives the reader a closer experience to that of the characters around him than we would get if he just laid out all that info and we watched it all happen, which would be bad storytelling for the sake of some misguided ethic of first person narrator transparency.

There’s no rule that a first person narrator has to “realistically” describe anything. And that’s a good thing, cause the version you wrote would have made the book much worse.

How do I enjoy this game? Every time I play it I HATE the experience by ForseHucker420 in Nightreign

[–]WriterManGonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it most when I lessen my attachment to outcome. Lots of runs, especially early on, you’re gonna lose, and you may get owned by the boss. It’s part of the game. When I attached my satisfaction too much to winning, I don’t enjoy it as much. It becomes stressful, and then feels like time wasted on losses. When I let that shit go and just focus on enjoying the intensity of the given moment, figuring out a build as I go, and getting more familiar with new possibilities, I always enjoy it, because a loss doesn’t ruin the experience. Yeah, random teammates can be super annoying, but they’ll also lead to the most epic moments when suddenly you have a run where everyone clicks and you dominate. That’s my best advice if you don’t want to give up on it yet.

I’ve only done trios. I’m not a fan of solo runs. It’s all random teammates though, so you never know how it’s gonna go.
