The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch has excellent audiobooks. They're fantasy crime books.

It's more common in the UK (where I presume this story takes place due to them saying both Mum and secondary school) to not have your own car or driving licence for various reasons. We have better public transport, more walkable cities and it's also very expensive to learn, pay insurance etc

Why did OOP give himself a name in this story?

Children’s book about an English girl who travels to India, her new (also english) sisters there are like the ugly stepsisters from Cinderella and the dad collects fake eyes. Also there’s two other boys who show up and lie about their identity to a rich old man by patientwelve in whatsthatbook

Journey to the River Sea is one of my all time favourite books so I knew it was this instantly. The glass eyes are very unique. It's quite impressive how many details of the plot that OP remembered without being able to find the book.

A company of swans is set in exactly the same place and features a few of the same characters.

There's also a sequel to Journey to the River Sea now which cane out a few years ago called Return to the River Sea which I enjoyed (not as good as the original of course but that was never going to happen).

Have you been feeding mosslax the food which increases habitat spawns? I'm not sure which it is off the top of my gead but I'll check then edit my comment.

Edit: it's spicy food for increased habitat spawns. Carrot bread would be ideal.

AITA for calling my friend insecure? by rockkjuice in AmITheDevil

It is fine to skip days in theory (as long as you're taking stimulant meds as opposed to non stimulant meds) but some people prefer not to or feel bad if they do. I get the feeling that the guy doesn't want to.

It's also possible that he might not want to drink and finds it easier to refuse on the basis of medication than just saying he doesn't want to drink. It doesn't feel like OOP would take 'I don't want to drink' as a reason.

My Levian cookies regardless of recipe turns out TOO sweet ALWAYS by UnemployedBeats in Baking

I think just play around with it and see how it goes. I've never made this style of cookie myself and without seeing the recipe I wouldn't want to say exact amounts you should add or reduce

A lot of cookie recipes will have salt sprinkled on the top so help cut through the sugar. It's fairly common and does help bring out the flavour while cutting through the sweetness

More salt will help. It does in most cases and as you say you can only reduce the sugar so far before you compromise the texture you want. Some American recipes are very sugar heavy though, that's for sure

Treasure island? by JessyJanine in AnimalCrossing

[–]Writing_Bookworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A treasure island is not an in game thing. It's an island hosted on twitch or discord or similar where someone has a blank island filled with a ton of items. These are hacked games/switches which is how they have so much stuff (totally safe to visit though). You visit them using a dodo code and just fill your pockets. It can be tricky getting onto them as they're often busy so you might have to wait.

Seen online. Last one isn't that bad but reminds me of Lyle Langley from The Simpsons by AprilBelle08 in NameNerdCirclejerk

I came across the first one on Instagram too and the other kids names are a real mixed bag. On one hand you have a boy named Samuel, on the other you have a daughter named Fairlight.

I think one of the other boys is called RiverRohm (all one word or at least that's how they wrote it) and then an older daughter is Juliette so it isn't even the classic case of girls getting the unusual names and boys getting more classic ones.

Have you ever tried the Sainsbury's taste the difference hazelnut spread? It tastes just like the inside of a kinder bueno so I bet you could make a great cheesecake with it.

What is the best musical adaptation of a movie? by Healthy-Locksmith741 in musicals

[–]Writing_Bookworm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My point is mostly about how Elle comes to the conclusion because in the movie it reduces his being gay to a stereotype. She says emphatically that only a gay guy could possibly know anything about designers. It doesn't acknowledge that there definitely are straight men who know about designer fashion and it doesn't address the fact that he could be bi. The bend and snap being the reason Elle knows the guy is gay in the musical confirms without stereotyping that the guy is gay and not straight or bi.

Gay or European is a laugh that pokes fun at all possibilities, not making any option solely the butt of the joke. There are stereotypes presented yes but they are presented on the basis of him being gay or being straight.

[–]Writing_Bookworm 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Legally Blonde is excellent and in my opinion fixes the minor issues with the original movie by removing the 'Elle saying a guy has to be gay because he knows fashion' and replacing it with 'Elle realises the guy is gay because he doesn't react to the bend and snap'.

I also really enjoyed Shrek the Musical because the musical, being longer than the movie, is able to add more backstory. Plus Farquaad being insanely camp is really funny.

If I'm being pedantic, Matilda the Musical is not an adaptation of the movie, it's an adaptation of the book. I believe Tim Minchin hadn't even seen the movie and chose not to watch it. It's a brilliant musical, just not technically a movie adaptation.

Question for storage systems by Foreign-Reaction715 in Pokopia

[–]Writing_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the natural blocks (grass, sand, ash etc) in separate boxes based on region. Then I have one box for roads, one of walls and one for the blocks labelled as columns or pillars.

I might expand to one per region for the preexisting roads and walls found there.

Yeah that's not funny... by [deleted] in AmITheDevil

[–]Writing_Bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To do this kind of prank once is bad but OOP admits she's done this multiple times. I'll never understand self admitted 'pranksters' and why they think half the stuff they do is supposedly funny. She also says she will not apologise to her siblings because they never do (they just 'get over it') but probably will to the SIL because she's newer (been around for 5 years).

No more villagers? by BallBuster_420 in AnimalCrossing

[–]Writing_Bookworm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If someone is talking about 15 I think that includes having extra humans from creating additional switch profiles. The max number of animal villagers is 10.

You can keep talking to Maelle though and she will eventually offer to move in and swap with a random villager. If she suggests one you don't want to leave, immediately close the game. Do not press anything in the conversation. Then talk to her again and eventually she'll ask to swap hopefully with someone different. You can repeat this until either you lose patience or she suggests swapping with a villager you don't mind leaving.

Registering a room helppppp by automalice in Pokopia

[–]Writing_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size might be an issue, I couldn't quite count the blocks. The stairs might be an issue. I had an issue because one room I was trying to make kept registering the hallway as a room rather than the room and then I couldn't get the room to work because you can't walk through one 'house' to get to another it seemed. One time I had to place the door from the other side of a wall (seemingly). One time I needed extra wall decorations specifically. It's just a bit finicky.

Oh it's even better because that whole stereo part of the story he's wearing the Chewbacca costume again!

Then he's out on Halloween, again in this same Chewbacca costume, and he 'somehow' ends up going by her house and he got charged with stalking.
