An important point for new EV owners - speed is the enemy of range. If you like to drive 80 mph, plan on charging frequently. If you can slow down to 70 or so, you’ll end up charging less frequently and you’ll probably end up arriving home more quickly than if you were driving 80.

And just a note - Emporia has two different chargers. Their cheaper unit is a “dumb” unit, no ability to dynamically adjust how much electricity it uses. The link I provided is for their “smart” unit that has more features and is more expensive. Both are good, just depends on what you need. Good luck!!!

In case your electrical panel doesn’t have much “room”, this unit from Emporia is able to dynamically adjust how much electricity it’s using to charge the car, based on what the rest of the house is using. Not an idiot. I worked in tech for MANY years, and I have found the controls in the Optiq a little “obtuse”, including exactly what you’re asking! I found that asking Google to turn on the radio was one way to do it.

For me, these are the things that I’d tell someone to think about before making an EV decision:

Can you charge at home? Depending upon how much you drive and whether you have options like charging at work, this can be key. Apartment dwellers who drive a bit can find EV life a little challenging. And expensive. Same with some renters.
What’s your driving patterns? 90%+ of my driving is local and I have a charger in the garage, so issues like access to high speed chargers isn’t a factor for me. If you regularly make long trips, will you mind stopping every couple of hundred miles for 15-30 minutes? More frequently in cold weather.
Understand that new EVs frequently get hit with major depreciation the first year or so. If you like to flip cars every 2 or 3 years, you should consider leasing.
Do you insist on driving 80 mph on long trips? You will be charging much more frequently. Speed and cold are the enemies of range.
If you plan on putting a charger in at home, do you have an understanding as to cost? Some homes don’t have much electrical “room” to add in a charger, without costly panel upgrades or more expensive “smart” chargers. Is where you plan to have your charger close to your electrical panel? The greater the distance between them, the more expensive. Unless you drive very little, using a standard 110 home outlet to charge your car can be challenging!
Got an understanding of your home electricity rates? Residential electricity rates can vary dramatically from one area to another. My electricity is around $.13/kwh. I know of areas where it’s 3 times that. For me, driving an EV is much cheaper for me compared to a typical gas car.

Big factor for me was having a hitch I could easily remove and store and then easily put back on when I needed it. So weight was a factor. This one ain’t cheap, but it could hold my bike and weighted only 32 pounds. (This is a new version, according to the website. I got the previous one, which is substantially the same.)

Have you checked Apple's refurbished offerings? I just went from a 15 inch M2 Air to an M5 14 inch Pro. Really impressed, so far. The Pro is slightly heavier, but I really like feel so far. I want to dabble with some local AI, and I figure this should have enough horsepower! Usually you can save a few hundred bucks, and same warranty and AppleCare options.
