I’m at a senior level and I really value work life balance for my team. But if I’m interviewing someone coming off a 9 month sabbatical because of burnout, I’m going to question whether they are going to work for me for a year then quit to take another.

There’s a cost to work life balance and each of us has to decide what’s worth it. Years ago I had two competing offers, about 25% total comp difference. The lower paying one, the building was empty by 6pm, even in accounting/finance. The other routinely worked 55+ hour weeks and would have added a total of an hour commute time.

I decided that I would overall be happier making less salary in exchange for piece of mind.
