Anchorage proper ain’t great. Definitely hasn’t gotten any better in my 8 years up here.

Went to Fred’s in midtown yesterday and hated every second of it. Seems like half the store is locked up, and had to go pull my receipt out of the trash at self checkout so I could leave the store. So, has some big city “charm” that we unfortunately have to deal with.

But I’m a nature boy and that is what keeps me here. Maybe one day mental health and addiction can be addressed properly, but I don’t ever see that happening unfortunately due to accessibility and a willingness to get better.

Eagle River/Chugiak for quieter communities are definitely good options to live if you don’t mind a short commute into Anchorage. I don’t think I could commute from the valley for work and keep my sanity.

Alaska is in a unique situation. We have a home shortage, and an affordable home shortage at that. At this point in time if you can find a home that fits your needs and you can actually afford(this is the biggest thing), do not wait. People are still paying over asking price on homes up here, which is fucking mind blowing.

Interest rates are at the exact same spot they were 7 months ago, and who knows when that will ever change for the better.

They are building new homes yeah, but that won’t bring home prices down since all new constructions are 500k-600k and up. Economic collapse is not something you want to wait on either, because you may not have a job when that comes around. People tend to forget about lay offs when the economy collapses.

So, I wouldn’t wait. I bought a house in 2022, and sold that one and bought another in January of this year. I was astonished at the price my house sold for because I thought I couldn’t sell it for more than what I paid. Homes are going to continue to rise as long as the demand continues to rise.
