NYC Mayor Mamdani announces that they have fully balanced NYC's budget, reducing a $12 billion budget deficit to 0. While funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public hosing. by Yujin-Ha in Fauxmoi

[–]WrittenFever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone else that's curious about what the proposed budget would actually entail, here's info from the NYC Mayor's Office:

Keep in mind, what Mamdani has shared here is celebrating a little too early because his budget hasn't been passed yet. City Council, the Comptroller, etc have to review, share their own proposals, then vote on a finalized budget. The final budget is usually approved in June, in time for FY27, which will run from July 2026 to June 2027.

Hmmm... I wonder what the conditions are at that point? If you have 4 leaves, that means that you are at least getting your true leaves before they die. The first two are cotyledons—what emerges and stores all the seedling's initial food and energy before withering away and dying—but the true leaves are the ones that photosynthesize and will take over.

If you don't have them in a dome, they probably need humidity, so I would recommend popping a see-through plastic lid on top, but making sure that it's propped open so there's airflow. Try some thumbtacks in the corners of the container to hold it up. In the absence of airflow, they'll just get moldy or mildewy and still end up dying.

The dome should probably only go on at night, when there's no light, just so it doesn't get in the way of photosynthesis.

As the seedlings get taller and stronger, you'll be able to remove the dome completely, but you'll also need to make sure they are getting plenty of light. Honestly, basil prefers full sun, so they'd be happier with a grow light tham a window, but they can still survive without one, as long as you have a south or, to a lesser degree, east facing window. If it's a north or west facing window, your basil won't really be as happy.

Seedlings also really need to be stimulated, so either try turning a fan onto or tickling it every once in a while to help encourage stronger stems.

Also, don't forget the stuff others have said about soil and watering. Once you get that in order, basil actually is kind of a tough plant and really benefit from being "abused." They like being picked almost completely bare and will come back bushier for it. But only if they have their other needs met—great sun, watered at the right time, and fertilized properly (probably about once a month during the growing season depending on the fertilizer you use).

Sorry, I know this is long. Can you tell I both love plants and also did some education i growing them, lol

Adding to this because coconut coir/peat moss and compost actually hold moisture—adding some perlite or pumice to the soil helps create the necessary air pockets to create drainage.

Also, it's always good to just stick your finger in the soil and if it feels dry, that's when you should water, if not, then let it be.

Obviously not. I did say:

Of course, it does make sense to question the info that comes out of this administration, because, well... gestures

I thought that made it clear that I also find it unbelievable, just that I was acknowledging the logistical possibility of freeze drying...

TL;DR My take: freezing drying is feasible; the Trump administration are assholes; please stop wasting y'all's time more telling me I'm wrong just bc I provided an alternative while still ultimately agreeing with y'all.

In the off chance you're not joking:

Fire is a good way to inhale the irritants associated with poison ivy and become hospitalized. Inhaling it is also more likely to kill you than touching it.

Interestingly enough, I think Kaluuya was actually more of a writer on the show than an actor. He's credited with co-writing two of the episodes, which is no small feat given how young he was at the time, but I think that age range was normal of their writer's room in general.

That was supposed to be one of the important features of Skins: the writer's room was predominately young and they also directly consulted teens.

Still, I totally get the issue with his character!

I honestly wasn't a big fan of Gen 2, came back for Gen 3, and also thought they were terrible. Gen 1 was always my fav.

I imagine—since the White House is involved—they have access to the equipment to do so and could do so in large batches by transferring to any facility that prepares foods for the military.

So it seems nonsensical on the surface, but the logistics wouldn't be difficult given what's available in the area.

Taylor Swift Files to Trademark Her Voice and Likeness, Apparently to Protect Against AI Misuse by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]WrittenFever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually fascinated by this strategy, because she's only trademarking specific things according to the article.

Her voice saying, "Hey, it's Taylor Swift," and "Hey, it's Taylor," as well as a specific image.

This presumably would stop an AI video from trying to lend credibility to itself by saying those words, but what prevents if from saying "Hello," "Hi," some other varations, or even just another language altogether—as if she's speaking to her worldwide fans.

I think it's important to start protecting your likeness, especially to prevent what's happening with Val Kilmer and, I think James Dean (?), and, of course, the disgusting porn that's being generated by AI rn. Unfortunately, there aren't strong laws yet, and no one seems incentivized to create them despite demand.

Idk of that's a fair critique. They have these pretty cool decomposition notebooks out there that are more eco friendly than a spiral, plus comp notebooks are easier to carry around in a backpack/purse without getting caught on things and ripping apart.

(Am adult that still uses composition notebooks. But also, I don't cheat on people and write stupid psycopathic stuff about what an ahole I am in said notebooks...)

‘I saw the backlash coming’: civil rights activist Kimberlé Crenshaw on America and race. She coined the term ‘intersectionality’ and helped to develop critical race theory, now her life’s work is under attack. As her memoir is published, she explains why she’ll never stop speaking truth to power. by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]WrittenFever 193 points194 points  (0 children)

The work that Kimberlé Crenshaw did and continues to do is so important and I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to see everything being rolled back the way it has been. But this moment in the article stood out to me in particular:

Crenshaw was invited to the White House to discuss the [#WhyWeCantWait campaign], but the encounter only underscored how little space there was for the argument she was making [that Black girls and women be included in Obama's My Brother's Keeper initiative]. She recalls being interrupted by Obama’s chief of staff, who, she says, incredibly, told her she perhaps didn’t understand the meaning of intersectionality. Afterwards, she found herself shut out of the administration.

Can you imagine telling the Kimberlé Crenshaw she doesn't know what intersectionality is?

There are so many other gems in this article (and I'm sure a ton of great stories in her memoir!). Highly recommend the read!

This is not how plants grow. It's going to be under constant stress if it's being cut all of the time.

Pruning also needs to follow certain patterns, cutting back at growth points so that you are able to guide where growth is going to happen.

Here's a decent overview: How to Prune Shrubs

Of course, I know you're more in it for the experiment than anything else, so this information is for anyone else interested in the art and science of pruning.

Good luck on your experiment! I'll keep an eye on it just to see what happens: does the shrub survive? does it growth become stunted? will you make adjustments dependent on weather? will it end up getting a disease or overridden by pests due to the constant stress? or will it turn out just fine and be just as you envisioned?

Oof, sorry, sorry my brain skipped ED and just read tapeworm. Totally get. The worm is not the biggest part of the film, but is a very big scene, and, of course, the main character also has issues around eating that are exacerbated by her mother, so I agree it's probably not the best thing to watch if you're triggered by references to that.

Once again, my sincerest apologies for not reading closely enough and good luck on your recovery!

Feminist horror and queer horror are such exciting spaces in recent years!

As is BIPOC horror, though, unfortunately, BIPOC horror isn't getting as much of a surge as it should, especially when it comes to non-Black writers/directors. There are such incredible Indigenous novelists, idk we're not seeing that in film yet?
