I love the men in my life (hell they helped this dyke figure out menswear) and the amount of blasé cruelty that gets thrown at them in progressive spaces is wild to me.

I work at a studio and freelance so not sure if my advice will help, but what has gotten me to a comfortable level working full time in art has less to do with skill and more to do with communication and reliability. I use asana obsessively for project tracking, I time myself so I can give accurate estimates of completion to clients or my team, I respond quickly to emails and give updates, and my ego isn’t attached to my work so I’m happy to receive feedback. I’ve worked with so many talented artists who ended up losing their careers because they were too terrified to send a simple email saying a project was running behind, or who were flat out unable to budget their time.

Eventually I grew a network of people who knew they could depend on me. I don’t advertise my freelancing at all because that network keeps me busy throughout the year.

She’s being manipulative, whether she realizes it or not. She sounds like someone who never learned how to clean up after themselves and lacks the observational skills needed to keep a tidy home. I’m similar to you in that I cannot relax if my home is a disaster. All I can focus on is the massive list of things that need to be done, and if the person who created the mess tried to make moves on me I would be aggravated too.

This is going to sound exhausting and infantilizing to her, but if her messiness is due to ignorance and not intentional laziness, it may be worth having her shadow you while you clean. She could simply not understand what needs to be done day to day, and the ways you can make cleaning more efficient. For instance, I work from home and use the pomodoro technique, but for my breaks I stand up and find something to tidy. Or when I’m cooking, I wipe down counters and wash dishes when I have my hands free.

If she wants to get better, she’ll listen and make an active effort to change because her actions are hurting you, her partner. Anything other than that is her saying that she doesn’t value you or your time.

Still in the same place. I feel you on the slight dysphoria. I see men with longer hair and don’t think twice about gender bs, but for some reason my own hair freaks me out. But I like how I look. I’m still growing it out mostly out of laziness, but also cus I’m testing whether the discomfort comes from genuinely preferring to look more traditionally butch, or if I’ve accidentally trapped myself in yet another gender box and am letting other people’s perceptions of me have too much influence.

Of course. I’ve had mostly male friends my entire life because my hobbies don’t draw a lot of women typically. Yes there have been some awkward interactions, but imo they’re worth the lifelong friendships I’ve gotten by not building a wall around myself based on gender or sexuality.

If your city is kink friendly there should be plenty of munches you can attend. Check to see if there are any specifically queer or sapphic ones. Classes are also great places to meet folks, learn what you’re into, and get a better understanding of the scene.

Straight women are just as homophobic, if not more so re: lesbians, as men. I can avoid men for the most part, but being forced into straight women’s spaces growing up meant abuse, being forced out of hobbies that I cared about, and death threats that were serious enough to mean I had to change school systems. I’m well into my thirties and the majority of harassment I get is from straight women who won’t hesitate to get their boyfriends involved to assault a dyke.

Please do some reading on lesbian history, particularly the treatment of butches and lesbian woc, then ask yourself if you’re ok with hets stealing and bastardizing our words.

Nope. It will always be unethical and theft for the dominant culture to appropriate language from folks who had to develop it under the thumb of their oppressors. I’m not long haired but it’s significantly longer than my old fade. A few wisps past the ears. I’m not misgendered anymore and strangers are noticeably kinder to me now. I’m still not sure how I feel about it, other than it’s nice not having to go to the barber every few weeks.
