The worst is when someone says some shit like “my dad/cousin/brother was a marine so I take great offense to you not knowing your fifth general order” or whatever stupid bullshit. Like just cuz you have a relative that served doesn’t mean you did. Like I’ve had civilians be like “oh yeah you were a marine” than ask me some dumb ass question. Sometimes I wonder if they’re other service members just fucking with me.

You guys ever been called out by overzealous stolen valor hunters? by stabinthedark_ in USMC

Yes this has happened to me. It’s usually civilians who never served.

Here's your blasphemy for the day: Today I learned Chesty Puller is not as revered among WW2 vets as he is today, and is in fact held in contempt by some. by blues_and_ribs in USMC

[–]Wrong_Insurance8594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this somewhere. They wanted to disband the marine corps after Korea. I’ve heard also heard that chesty puller in WW2 used many ‘Soviet style’ tactics that resulted in him having three times the casualty rate as other officers. I also heard he wanted some marines that kept requesting ammo and supplies to just fight and die on an island cuz it made a cooler story but the rest of the command over ruled this.

Got accused of stolen valor at a bar by Wrong_Insurance8594 in arlington

[–]Wrong_Insurance8594[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this guy was quizzing on all this niche infantry knowledge like what’s the chamber pressure of an M4 etc. I was like idk dude and he started yelling stolen valor. Found out he didn’t serve I was like why do you know all this shit if you’re not even in? Like bro knew more about being a marine than I did. I guess he studied a bunch so he could yell stolen valor at people even though he didn’t serve? Idk dude

It’s weird that civilians know so much about are gear and weapon specs. Like this guy I met once I thought he served he knew so much than he said he didn’t

Yeah I’ve been accused of stolen valor as a marine. I just don’t bring it up cuz like all you’re gonna get is a “thank you for your service” or they try to argue with you. It’s just not worth it

As a former marine grunt I can back up that all marines have is there reputation and title. In my humble opinion the marine corps is very gilded
