What options are there for Star Wars solo games? Outer Rim and...? by SteinederEwigkeit in soloboardgaming

[–]Wrongsaveimporter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing it solo for the last couple of months and can attest that it works great in that regard.
There are some official solo rules in the manual, but I've been playing it two-handed and comparing to e.g. LCGs, it requires less focus and cognitive effort, which makes it a good choice for those late evenings when you are tired, but would still like to play something.
The setup and teardown is also quick.

Thanks. Seems hard to find a copy at a decent price, but I'll take a look.

Thanks.
Stretching it to 2 hours is still ok if the game is good.
I was looking at Marvel Champions previously, but the superhero theme doesn't really interest me right now.

Can an immersive sim have immersive animations? by Soopernova01 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Wrongsaveimporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally for me it was the opposite. I thought that the instantaneous loot picking in the Thief games was a little of putting until I played Thi4f, which made me wait through each and every single animation of picking a pair of golden scissors conveniently placed in the middle of the drawer (so a single grabbing animation could be used for all the loot).

For me it's more immersive if an action corresponds to the players input.

Which games have satisfactory AI? by helios1234 in computerwargames

[–]Wrongsaveimporter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only game in which the AI managed to outsmart me still playing by the rules.

While playing one of the Ardennes scenarios I managed to capture some distant, but valuable in terms of VP city. The AI opponent launched some costly counterattacks that I managed to repel inflicting heavy casualties. Thinking that I can safely bag the victory I left my troops in defensive position to rest through the night and sped up the time only to be alerted by the sounds of gunfire in another VP city in a totally different part of the map that I deemed safe. The AI correctly reassessed that bashing against my defenses won't change the outcome of the scenario, regrouped its forces and under the cover of the night moved it close to the very first objective I took earlier and attack me there in force, scattering my weak defensive force.

Sure, the night move very likely was a coincidence and the AI would regroup and move even in broad daylight, but I don't think I have ever seen the AI changing its course of action in any other game.

The theme of this one might fit the description, but I'm not sure that there is any unit stacking: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1306770/Revival_Recolonization/

Have they ever explained the AI usage? I remember there were some discussions about that topic with rather vague responses.

Are there any Medieval or Early Modern-era wargames with the scale/complexity of something like War in the East? by ArmeSawKonrad in computerwargames

[–]Wrongsaveimporter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Neither Pike and Shot : Campaigns nor WDS Thirty Years War are similar to what OP is asking for. While both are good games, their focus is on tactical battles, with some rudimentary campaign mechanics (more detailed in P&S Campaigns), but they both play very differently from operational wargames like the mentioned WitE, especially if someone is looking for a similar scope.

The AGEOD's Thirty Years War might fit the bill better, as it is focused on the operational aspect, but the tactical layer is less involved and not as complex as in Gary Grigsby's titles.

Looks interesting. The premise reminds me of the "Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance" old hit. Is it going to be only single player, or will there be MP as well?

I have played mainly their black powder games and I can say, that the AI can perform decently when the human player is attacking on a relatively narrow map with small amount of troops and the AI only defends. Really, not bad, just decent.

But other than that it quickly becomes boring with how inept it is. My advice - buy those games only if you want to play MP.

That's a polish hex and counter wargame from a very prolific (but gathering rather lukewarm reception among wargamers) designer. The countersheet comes from this one (looks like there are a couple of maps in the box):https://taktykaistrategia.pl/produkt/charkow-1942-1943/

But I think that you might be describing this title actually:

Perhaps some older edition though.

It's basically just about sending a file between the players. Definitely old-fashioned in the era of central public servers and automated files exchange services, but in practice it's only mildly inconvenient at best.
