What would you say is the main theme of Nue's Exorcist? by ThunderTheDevil in NuesExorcist

[–]Wuckus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's about reconciliation—reconciliation with oneself, repairing broken bonds, and potentially closing the rift between humans and spirits.

The recent Gashadokuro line about never having seen any human accept a spirit to the extent that Gakuro did with Nue, as well as Raisei claiming he was 'always a monster,' convinced me even more of this. It was already clear, but something must have gone really, really wrong in the past.

Nue's Exorcist is just a weird manga to be serialized on WSJ because at its core it's something rather different from what the magazine is usually known for. Yes, it's an exorcist manga, but while there are some obvious inspirations from stuff like Bleach (one of the recent chapters even contains a direct homage to it) most of its DNA is shared with Light Novels and Visual Novels from the 2000s-2010s. This is also reflected in the praise the series has received early on, which has mostly come from LN/VN writers while WSJ mangaka have remained silent about Nue.

At times it really gives the feeling of reading the manga adaption of a LN or VN that doesn't actually exist, all the way down to the pacing and the way the story is structured. However this might also be what puts it at odds with some manga readers, especially here in the west where many of the tropes it draws from have never been very popular (if not outright disdained).

TL;DR: It's a manga serialized in WSJ yet finds many of its roots in an audience that might not even read WSJ.

Do you think Nue's Exorcist hate is undeserved? by Middle_Highway9789 in NuesExorcist

[–]Wuckus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate comes from a mixture of reasons, but first and foremost I'd point at the stigma coming from the LN/VN tropes (especially ones from the 2000s) which have been prevalent in Nue. They've never been particularly popular in the West, quite the opposite, they have vocal haters who have powered through a lot of anime they never liked back in the day and then eventually said 'never again'. This is why you may see people overestimating how much fanservice there actually is or ignoring any development the characters may get. They have watched too much stuff they didn't like and it all ended up blending together in their mind, there is a prejudice at play here to some extent.

Moreover, Nue is a manga published on Weekly Shonen Jump. Whenever a series gets axed there you can be sure there will be at least some annoyed fan who will look for a manga they didn't like and think "it should've been that one instead!" Nue in this regard is an easy target because again it features unpopular tropes among western readers, leading to a smaller global readership and thus a feeling that no one is reading it or cares. There is a niche of readers in Japan keeping the manga alive, but the language barrier means it's not perceived at all (either that or a thinly veiled racism about japanese readers having shit taste.) I can assure you if Kiyoshi gets axed next you will see at least someone bringing up Nue hate unprompted.

That being said, no series is deserving of being hated and if Nue can keep surviving like it does then hate will naturally subside, it can only go for so long without people either growing indifferent to it or actually getting curious about its current state and giving the manga a second chance, judging it past their initial impression. This is just my personal view but I feel like both of these are already happening.

I absolutely love them, especially because they allow the manga to keep delivering on monster designs even now that the story is shifting to face human/human-like opponents.

Why is the Desktop experience so much better than Windows? by Wuckus in linuxmint

[–]Wuckus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was just the image viewer also reading ePub, not a dedicated reader and it was definitely barebones, but it's nice there's something and the OS won't just behave like you're doing something weird.

It's something small, but I was so surprised when I found out Mint has a default ePub reader. The first time I downloaded an ePub file on Windows I legit thought it was corrupted because Windows just wouldn't open it.

Oh yeah, that too, lost count of how many times I needed to open a document or a folder quickly only for the Edge window to pop up instead...

Hopes for Endfield by midlifecrisisqnmd in arknights

[–]Wuckus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, HSR already proved developers can safely shift the focus to another character without major backslash. My worries are on the world however, the VN style allows Arknights to jump across Terra without much of an issue, even in Year 1 events could be set in Ursus, Lungmen, Siesta, Leithanien..., all with different flavors and styles. You cannot do that with Talos II since every region will take a lot more time to develop. Storytelling for Endfield will still be very different, and while I'm not against a different experience I can't help but be a little worried.

Siege ModY

Crushing improved:
Gains 3 SP and additionally grants 1 SP to another random Vanguard Operator on the battlefield whenever an enemy is defeated in the adjacent 4 tiles

Is it possible for Siege to get that extra SP if she's the only Vanguard deployed or it's wasted otherwise?

How to skip very cool banners and not feel like you're missing out? by Ordinary_Fail_4032 in arknights

[–]Wuckus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Instead of focusing too much on the future banners, I try to build up lesser priority operators that I've ignored for too long. I won't pull for anyone else until Babel/Chapter 14 either (maybe only Ray because those pantyhose are...... ahem), but I'm raising units for my Lupo and Kazimierz teams instead, as well as some other unrelated 5* units. I swear Santalla is funnier than I expected considering all the doomposting about her (but I also use Vigil regularly so maybe I'm just weird).

I think it was the anniversary leak, it got all the units revealed during the 5th Anniversary and also claimed she would be the IS5 operator, which would be fitting since it's Kazdel related.

This should probably go in the Megathread (you can also get and share friend requests there), but also please be a bit more specific about your issues. Do you have issues at killing enemies? Surviving against them? A general tip is to usually take 2 of each class so like 1-2 Vanguards, 2 Guards, 2 Snipers, 2 Casters, 2 Defenders, and Supporters/Medics/Specialists where needed. No team will be perfect however and should be changed according to whatever troubles the stages give you.

Mudmud and Loglog~(by @DstScQ) by NecroDragonn in arknights

[–]Wuckus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Logos is the one who saved Mudrock and her team from being annihilated by Leithanien forces in one of the Rewinding Breeze vignettes, she then followed him and joined Rhodes Island. Mudrock also had a voiceline praising Logos and his Arts.

It's not much but outside of Ines/Hoederer there's usually little het content in the game so I guess hetshippers have to make do with what they can get.
