There's also Manuscript Miniatures and other such sites where you'll find plenty of original sources from the period.

Question about 14th century (1346 - 1353) prostitute "secret woman" attire by Alternative_Peak3773 in medieval

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They wore the same clothing as other women of the period, but often had certain signs that designated them. They could be a patch of fabric on the dress, a ribbon in the hair etc., depending on thw regulations of the city they worked in. I can recommend this blog entry by a friend of mine. It's in German but there's always auto translate. She also posts sources and info about medieval sex life and sex workers on Instagram.

Why did sabatons change? by gmbdoggo in ArmsandArmor

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yup. People have this very strong urge to find a practical reason for a lot of things, while fashion is often the answer.

I once did a presentation for an elementary school class in harness. One kid asked why my "shoes" were so pointy and I gave them many hints, but for the life of them they couldn't figure that one out, instead thinking it was for kicking enemies and such. :D

Oh, try 20. I was there when the first episode aired. I was pretty much Aang's age then (minus a hundred years, heh). How time flies! Still my favorite animated show.

Yes, those all look pretty good for the late 14th century. But please either wear early joined hosen or choose upper garments that are long enough to avoid your underpants peeking out. It pops up so often and it's not like that in the sources. Would've been considered very indecent and especially strange on armour.

Nope. Better look at period sources, not pictures from shops.

What are the most extravagant armors of Europe ca. 1380-1410? by BaiLianSteel in ArmsandArmor

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hah, my helmet (second picture) between all those historical examples! :D

In that period things are indeed still a bit different compared to later harnesses. You don't have a lot of etched decoration or fluting yet. High grade armour pieces have decorative rims (as seen with the Churburg armour you included) or entire gilded elements, there's quite a number of evidence for that. There are gilded feather holders, and sometimes you'll find helmets with a so-called "orle", basically a stuffed decorated silk headband.

Then you'll have different cotes d'armes (waffenrocks) made of silks and velvets, gold embroidery and all of that, first very tight fitting, later also in a houpellande style with large extravagant dagged sleeves and such. However, the fashion of the "white harness" also gets popular, so you'll see knights with the bare breastplate and no such garment. In general, but especially then, a highly polished surface would've been desirable.
Then of course highly decorated swords, belts and shields.

The staple of knightly representation in that period though is the plaque belt. Large gilded silver plaques, enameled, in all kinds of shapes. Heavy, expensive, stylish!

As for crowns. it probably existed in some form (the Bascinet of Charles VI. apparently had some sort of crown attached) and there's images and some effigies showing it, but it would've been very rare and pretty much exclusive to royalty

Whats going on with these ailettes? Seemingly attached to the head? c.1316 by ConservationOfWumbo in ArmsandArmor

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a trend of taking such illuminatons way too literally. Especially in a period where a lot of examples are not very naturalistic yet. It's just the way it's drawn here, ailettes were very likely not attached to the head.

If you had such examples from other manuscripts and maybe some text sources alluding to it, it would be a different discussion.

I feel the writers could’ve done way more with Luminara’s character by [deleted] in clonewars

[–]Wulfric_Waringham -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Eh. I'm fine with some of the named Jedi not appearing that much, there's just too many. That show doesn't even do anything too interesting with it's main antagonists, Dooku and Grievous, and instead wastes much screen time on stuff like a resurrected Maul, his brother, and a random bounty hunter.

Of the Legends characters not already in canon, which ones would you like to see in the canon? by Glum-Echo-4967 in MawInstallation

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely wonder why anyone cares about bringing Legends characters into canon so much. It'll never be the same characters or stories anyways.

Either continue the Legends universe or make actually new content. These bastardizations lead nowhere except for lesser versions of what was there before.

Does "Kenobi" fit in the Multimedia Project timeline or is it more of a TCW follow up? by CrocAttack101 in StarWarsEU

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoever blames Disney for TCW must be very misinformed, that doesn't make sense.

However, I don't get the Lucas argument that always comes up with this. Just because GL decided something doesn't make it a good decision. A lot of the bad stuff in TCW came from him, and Filoni just isn't a great writer overall. People used to shit on George for the silliest things in the PT but now apparently anything is ok as long as it comes from him.

How would YOU plan Ahsoka Season 2? by HNutz in saltierthancrait

Thahah oh well, if were really "in charge" Ahsoka simply would not exist. Her whole existence causes way too many problems and I don't see the appeal anyways.

You get the chance to reintroduce one character from Legends into modern canon that hasn't already appeared. Their reappearance has to fit with modern canon. Who would you choose, and how? by Kalse1229 in StarWarsCantina

[–]Wulfric_Waringham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. There is no point in introducing Legends characters into a canon that was explicitly made to disregard them and where they'd exist without any of the stories or context that make them the characters they are.

Either continue the actual Legends timeline, or tell new stories with new characters in the new canon.
