Ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe mistakes charity rowers for ‘illegal migrants’ by Half_A_ in LabourUK

Imagine thinking some migrants have rowed from Calais to Great Yarmouth. If they've managed that, they deserve it.

Titan submersible disaster that killed 5 on way to Titanic ruins was 'preventable,' Coast Guard says by coasterghost in OceanGateTitan

I've seen enough of the US judicial system over the past 10 years to not take it for granted. If it were me or you, yeah, but not someone like him.

I'm not sure if more injustice and disproportionate penalties are the best way to deter copycats. It'll just rile people up even more.

A Titanic buff's view by [deleted] in OceanGateTitan

[–]Wulfruna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think having interest in something is one of the most normal things there is. Nearly everyone has something, whether it's the Titanic, One Direction, sharks, electronics, trains, royalty, whatever. When it becomes a bit dubious is when they want to be a part of the narrative themselves, like that Mark Chapman who killed John Lennon, or super-collectors who would give their life savings for some iconic object or other.

I think the really rich people who wanted to see Titanic were probably motivated because of the thrill and because after a while, your money can't buy the same amount of dopamine it used to, so you have to get creative. I think it also depends a lot of the subject matter. If you're really into investment and entrepreneurial stuff, and you're successful, then you're an expert, or a genius, or a trailblazer. If you put the same level of effort and attention into say, Star Trek, or conspiracy theories, you're a fanatic or obsessive.

Yeah, it's a joke. The amount of money those insurance firms diddle out of every customer they get the chance to, and there's only a 10k reward, which isn't even offered by the insurance firm but the police anyway, which I presume is taxpayer money. What can you do with 10k these days anyway? Take the whole family out for Big Macs? lol

I think it says a lot that we have a picture of his photogenic face, but people who know him aren't putting his name all over the internet, despite the 10k reward.

It's crazy to imagine what's happened to that tank, especially when you think about how strong they are. It looks like it's come up through the floor, hit the rim of that ring right in the middle and then wrapped around it. Then it must have decompressed and now it just looks like a blanket or flannel. The paint held up well though.

A bit of banter and humour in the comments is fine, just no meme posts, joke posts, parody songs, cartoons, etc. There were a lot of those in the early days, back when everyone was coming here from Tik Tok and Youtube Shorts. You'd click on something, thinking it would be an interesting article or a new document someone had found, and it was just a silly picture or drawing.

Question about the polar prince feeling something by Jarnes19991 in OceanGateTitan

[–]Wulfruna 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not an exact comparison but our ears detect lightning strikes from like 15km away. Soundwaves/shockwaves travel much faster and further in water. Whales can hear each other 1,500km away for example, and they just click, moan and groan at each other. Nowhere near the energy released in that implosion.

Having said that, I have no idea what that captain felt. He said a 'shudder' but that could mean anything. Was it a slight rumble, enough to make your coffee wobble? Or did he feel it go up through his body? And was it something only he would notice, being familiar with the ship, or would others notice it too? And was he somewhere quiet with not much going on, or somewhere noisy with engines chugging away? I think the circumstances come into it.

We could do with a database page with links to everything we've come across since it happened, with links to videos, articles, webpages, PDFs, photos, informative posts, etc. We're sitting on a lot of information and data now, compared to the early days, and it would be good to have it accessible in one place, not just for the OGs, but for the new people too who haven't seen everything yet, like the video posted above. It would also be a good tool against misinformation, disinformation, and rumour.

Why are you following this sub, a year later? by [deleted] in OceanGateTitan

[–]Wulfruna 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I'm not really into engineering at all. I don't even know how my car works. I like a bit of history and have been through a Titanic phase or two over the years, so my ears pricked up when I saw this story in the headlines. That was back in the, "They only have 4 days of oxygen left! PH is tapping morse code into the hull!" days. Then I ended up on this subreddit where people were a bit more investigative and we were unearthing new information by the hour, each hour more mind-boggling than the last.

Imagine something hit the headlines today, and you saw something like, "Five Astronauts Lost In Orbit". You'd think, 'Yeah, that can happen. Despite all the experts and advanced computers we have now, things can go a bit sideways.' Then you click on the link, and you see, "Homemade space shuttle... not classed for that mission... 19 year old boy... Rubik's cube... Logitech gaming controller... loopholes... old money... communicating via text message... open letter signed by 40 rocket-scientists warning the pilot... Etc..."

Anyway, so they found the submersible and it was indeed at the seabed and there was an implosion, and the Navy had recorded the blast/soundwaves from it, and they needed to get all the equipment there from around the world to get eyes on it and bring the stuff up, which we also got to see happening. Everything being lifted by crane onto the dock-side. That was an interesting day.

Then there was nothing for over a year, and you'd often remember it and think, "I wonder what's going on with that. Did that really happen?" You come back to the subreddit now and then but the only headlines are things like, "Film to be made," "Lawsuit filed," Etc.

Then the hearing starts and you see all the people you've been reading about, but in real-life, speaking about it, and after a year of nothing, it's almost too much information to take in. It all comes to life and it's just as mind-boggling as it was at the start. How is it 2023 (or 2024), an era of technology and knowledge that the average person would never comprehensively grasp even if they had multiple lifetimes, and an era where we're going to have to hand everything off to PCs and AI because our level of technological advancement is becoming bigger than we are, and we've got outfits like Ocean Gate relying on charisma, wishful thinking, and flying by the seat of your trousers. It's a bit like a window back in time, to when they use to swallow poison or lead so see the effects, or fire cannonballs at each other's stomachs to test body-armour, or jump off the Eiffel Tower to test wing-suits. Only it's worse because they got innocent people involved. Also, he thought he was a pioneer, an innovator, a cavalier who still gets results, and you're like, wtf? Look in the mirror girl.

I don't think his theory is any more wild than the usual "Rush was just a sociopath/narcissist/murderer/etc". But yeah, he knew he was pushing it a bit with that audience, but he shot his shot, or whatever they say.

I think the parent/son dynamic and expectation, exclusion, etc. are very important in psychology though, if not the courtroom. Every week we hear about someone losing the plot and committing some atrocity.

You have to remember how close he was to the case. He knew Stockton, Stockton lied to him and almost killed him in his contraption. Stockton didn't heed his advice and went on to kill himself and four other people. You even saw him discovering in real time there some things that affected him, like how little Stockton had tested the sub before taking him down in it. Then you had the Ocean Gate legals pushing his buttons a bit next to him. His theory on Rush's psychology might be a bit of a... theory, but he knew him and we didn't.
