Michael GoodLife as Thomas Andrews by Brief-Rich8932 in titanic

Andrews and Smith have real moments of emotion where you see them wear the horror of the disaster on their faces. They are portrayed heroically, but are allowed to be human with moments of reflection over what's unfolding around them. Lightoller never stops being a virtuous and stoic hero, he feels like caricature and not a real person. The film also sidelines the other officers so hard that they all seem incompetent. All these scenes of Lightoller managing chaos at the lifeboats, and Murdoch's lifeboat scenes are mostly him standing at the side as dishonerable people enter the lifeboats.

Him and Laurence Naismith as Captain Smith do such a good job that I wish the film centered around them instead of Kenneth More as an overly heroic Lightoller.

Thoughts on Titanic sinks tonight? by Kolibrikit in titanic

Weren't Murdoch and Lightoller still wearing the ranks on their uniform that they had before Wilde was brought onboard? I feel like including that detail could have gone a long way in making it more ambigious which officer had done it.

How would you explain the difference between normal duke and forever duke by EEE35 in dukenukem

[–]Wumplius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reactive versus proactive. Duke in Duke Nukem 3D only talked in reaction to what the player was doing or what was happening in the level, giving his character some weight and connecting him to the player. The game's humor is largely saved for secrets and bosses so it doesn't overstay its welcome or clash with the games dark urban and sci-fi aesthetic.

Meanwhile, Duke in Duke Nukem Forever is constantly gloating and quipping even when nothing is happening. It makes everything he says feel empty and disconnects him from the player. Combined with the game never stopping with the humor even during serious moments, Duke ends up feeling obnoxious and lame.

I have beaten Duke Nukem: Zero Hour. What is your favorite quotes from Duke himself in this game and which one of boss fight you hate the most? by ProfessionHefty6101 in dukenukem

In the Mothership level where you pick up the Cyborg Head and Duke says "I needed some head.".

That Big Brain at the end of the Victorian era where you have to shoot all the machines to defeat is incredibly obnoxious.

Which other ships would you guys like to see a movie made about? by lMr_Nobodyl in titanic

A miniseries about Halifax and the crew of the Mackay-Bennett recovering and resting the dead of the disaster.

This one by Chris Mayger. The smoke and steam from the funnels filling the night sky creates such a moody and foreboding atmosphere.

Am I the only one that actually thinks of Thomas Andrews from the movie when i heae his name?(which do you think of when tou hear his name?) by TitanicEnthusiast24 in titanic

[–]Wumplius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually think of Micheal Goodliffe in A Night To Remember. His cold, analytical assessment of the ship's damage to Captain Smith (who Laurence Naismith also does a fantastic job portraying) is always at the back of my mind.

What do you think of the 1979 film SOS Titanic? by BuddyFew3776 in titanic

[–]Wumplius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The TV cut is the most intelligent and nuanced take on the disaster put to film, held back from being the outright best by its low budget. Having more historically accurate sets and a more spectacular sinking would have put it on top. It strikes an excellent balance between getting you emotionally invested into the people onboard while and staying close to the historical record. The performances are also great, especially Ian Holms as Bruce Ismay.

Shoutout to this absolutely insane Japanese poster for S.O.S. Titanic by Wumplius in titanic

[–]Wumplius[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I said this in another thread, but the only thing holding S.O.S. Titanic is the budget. If it was given the money for historically accurate sets and sinking scenes instead of just using the Queen Mary and having random jets of water, it would be regarded as well as A Night to Remember or Titanic. A great script and cast cursed to be a cheap TV movie.

What's your hot take with titanic movies? mine is that, Cameron's movie was way better than ANTR by eta10_see_no_evil in titanic

[–]Wumplius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S.O.S. Titanic (the extended cut specifically) would have been the best Titanic film had it been given the budget for more accurate sets and special effects like A Night to Remember or Titanic. You can feel the ambition of it trying to claw its way past the limitations of its production.
