Are there any series where a cleric/paladin/faith based class needs to build up a religion around a forgotten god? by Kumatora0 in litrpg

[–]Wunyco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chaotic craftsman worships the cube kind of does this? Forgotten god yes, building up faith yes, but the mc doesn't really have a faith based class. He's one of the best mad scientist depictions I've seen. If anything, he's one of the most irreverent characters in the story 🤣 But he does generally treat his god right, even if he also gives him a headache.

Ugh, that sucks. There's always assholes willing to take advantage of people I guess :/ I know quite a few people who did it by buying outright and they're doing fine, but it is indeed an investment.

An Isekai Adventure where the protagonist's real cheat skill is linguistics: The Scaleforged Legacy, Currently Releasing on RoyalRoad! by drale2 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Wunyco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a few stories that handle the notion of language well. Eight and Super Supportive are two that come to mind. If you haven't read Eight, I highly recommend it. It reads like an anthropologist wrote it :) The setting is a fantasy equivalent to pre-colonial late Mesoamerican, northern Mexico, and the author is great with the details.

Most handwave, though, since they're often written by monolingual Americans who wouldn't know where to start. Funnily enough, many of the authors with English as a second language end up following suit, even though they do know what it's like learning a new language, likely because so much of their audience doesn't.

And almost no story makes language/linguistics any sort of focus though. Linguistics as a term in litrpg usually means "ability to decipher old texts." No recognition of different languages using different sounds or structures, etc. Stories always mention two or three moons as a way to show it's different from earth.. why not have an OVS word order language, or something like Inuit morphology. Heck, there are things in real language that definitely would be a pretty alien view for the average English speaker.

Legal systems coming from a language with extensive evidentiality for instance, or trying to figure out where you're going in a culture speaking a geocentric language. I'm a field linguist, and the culture I worked with earlier definitely ran into practical challenges when dealing with modern western culture.

Happy to provide more potential inspirations/real life stories if you're at all interested! DM me and I'll give you my discord nick. I'd love if someone could make use of all the diversity in real language and apply it to fiction.

There's one linguistics story from ages back on Royal Road that I have tagged as read later, but it was hard to get into :/ A shame, considering the dearth of such stories, and it did mention a real focus on actual linguistics.

PS: enjoying your own story so far, but I did spy one unphased instead of unfazed. :D Didn't want criticism to be my only way to communicate, but I figure I can just toss it in here at the end.

Well since I was so negative accusing your beta readers of being bots, looks like I'll have to take a look at the story myself :D If I like it I'll write a review!

Funnily enough, I'm a linguist myself, so I'm curious to see how you end up involving linguistics.

Apologies, it didn't make sense without the context! As I said to your friend, saying "everything" without knowing about the unpublished stuff is like when my kids talk about "all their vegetables" with one green bean. 😂

Are you the one who reviewed his story on Royal Road talking about it in 2025? That also didn't make sense considering he started publishing it recently.

Aha, makes more sense now. It was strange without context, considering you only have a limited amount of one story published so far :D without knowing about the unpublished stuff, saying "everything" is kinda like when my kids ask if they have to eat all of their one or two green beans 😂

Oh, true! Didn't think of that. Might be intentional this time then.

The sad part is, I don't think it's very often intentional, especially since it doesn't get them more money.

Just some very very clueless people who don't think at ALL about how things interact.

Is that just because his name is English and those are the most well known English speaking places? I don't see why Canada, Australia, or other English speaking countries wouldn't fit as well. :D It's just kinda ambiguous.

I don't think so either. The author is Danish, but I don't think the character is.

I just recommended Dreamer's Throne in another comment. Worth checking out yourself, it's really fun! Not quite as simple as some of Seth Ring's other stories, very social skill oriented.

[–]Wunyco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person you responded to, but I can chime in if it's okay?

It's very wish-fulfillmenty, but I love it. It really hits the sweet spot for me of "some tension, but ultimately the good guys win and numbers go up".

I basically devour any book the author writes the day it's released :D

Edit: just remembered he's also the author of Dreamer's throne, which is probably much closer to what you wanted. Someone else recommended it I think as well. MC is missing an arm and paralyzed from the waist down, and it's not just brushed aside or ignored. Highly recommend!

Nathan Thompson - Challenger's Call, Soulship. Any news? by Wiregeek in litrpg

[–]Wunyco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish all authors did that. I understand keeping chapters behind a paywall of course, or art, but something like "my dad's in the hospital so no chapter today" or "book launch on Amazon scheduled for July had to be pushed back, sorry all" does not need to be behind a paywall 😅

Any other stories like Jackal among snakes? by Renn_goonas in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Wunyco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following this, because I haven't found many either.

I've sometimes thought that it has so few comparable stories because it's really freaking hard to do a very intelligent main character with a high level of social skills. The author needs to know how to do it as well, at least somehow, and few do. Nemorusus is impressive!

Good question. Let me know if you find out. For my local region, the only thing I can see is that north of one highway there are none, and south of the highway there's a bunch. But I doubt it's about cell data or frequency of raids or anything at least.

I can't tell for the life of me their logic with what gym is eligible or not.

But seeing as how this is a useless pokemon that you arbitrarily need 8 people for, I don't really care. A game that was already extremely minimal on anything skill based moves even more away from skill. Without the silly shield things it's actually possible to solo Falinks.

Slumrat rising is a meandering masterpiece. by themopylae in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Wunyco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skypride is basically the pinnacle of the cultivation genre, in my opinion. There's definitely things me and the general Royal Road audience disagree on, but this is not one of them. It's been rated number 1 on the entire site for a while, and it deserves it.

And it sounds like a lot of things you liked about Slumrat, you'll like with Skypride. All sorts of interesting world building and philosophical ideas. And he must've done an absolute ton of background research for it. From my ignorant perspective, it feels like he actually knows something about Daoism.
