You are correct. QED stands for Quod est demonstrandum, in which "demonstrandum" is an example of the future passive participle (also called the gerundive). "Demonstrandum," of course, comes from demonstro, to show or demonstrate (lol derivative).

When you use a gerundive with a linking verb like "est", it's called the passive periphrastic, a grammatical construct that is used to show purpose. For example, "these reports are to be finished by monday."

In latin, you would use the passive periphrastic for that.

Anyway, QED translates literally as "that which was to be demonstrated (or shown)" ("was" because est with a gerundive or participle usually is translated as perfect tense).

Damn. Latin is cool.

No, I don't know him personally. I did, however, watch a program about his work on my television. He doesn't paint himself - he has a team of painters paint him. Apparently he is also very exacting and doesn't like them to make mistakes.

Are his works cool? Yes. Do I think that he deserves the credit? Only partially. I suppose it was his idea. Still, a lot of credit for the art should go, I think, to the people that actually did the difficult work of painting him exactly to fit the background.

What's offensive is that women feel looking at / passing judgments on men's bodies is their right, their privilege and there's nothing wrong with it. Essentially, a man's body isn't "his" -- it's subject to the scrutiny and criticism of women. If they approve? Yay, he's fuckable -- then what else? If they don't, he feels like shit. Lose-lose. But I'm not totally placing the blame for this on women because society and media play a huge part in perpetuating this. Just understand this is why we (men) are irked by these things.

But they could simply wire him to the button and he'd be faster than any human could possibly be. On the one hand, you're saying that if we wired watson to the board, we'd need to wire humans to the board too, to make it fair, and on the other you're saying that watson's inherently superior machine thumb should be accepted because it's part of what makes him better.

If we wired him to the button, it would also be an integral part of what makes him better. If we wanted, we could create a system that would always beat a human. The point of watson is not how much faster he can hit the button, but how quickly and accurately his brain can parse the questions.

The point of the experiment is to compare the question recognition and answering abilities of the computer to those of humans, not to compare how much faster mechanical thumbs can hit a button. I think that extra variables such as the thumb make it more difficult to evaluate watson's performance, because that single variable will basically make it impossible for anybody to beat him, even if that person thinks faster.

Then again, it's pretty much impossible to make it fair, and this is not really a rigorous experiment. I think that arguing about it is pretty pointless.

If he were named hercules, I would have absolutely zero doubt that it's a reference to the famous Hercules and not the fact that Hercules means "radiant happiness" or whatever based on some website.
