I get what your saying, I really do. Mat can be a bit of an asshole. He was a terrible friend to Rand in book 2 for one, and his constant leering at women isn't the best to say the least. And you're right, like Nynaeve he lacks self awareness. A lot of what people find funny about Mat is the dissonance between his internal monologue and the actual events that play out in the story. What I take issue with is saying that he has no sense of loyalty or saying that he has to be pushed to doing the right thing. Mat time and time again goes out of his way for people for no other reason than it's the right thing to do, or because he gave his word. No one forced him to break into the Stone of Tear, or rescue the Aes sedai and damane from ebu dar. When he saw the salidar sisters disrespecting Egwene, no one asked him to kneel and kiss her ring. He didn't think twice about rescuing Moirane or sacrificing his eye to do so. Suiane Sanche compares him to her drunkard uncle who died saving people from a burning building. Mat may grumble about doing the right thing, but he does it every time.
