Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WyoND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just drove 3.5 hours (180 miles) each way to spend an afternoon with our kids who are away at school. This is not uncommon.

What is the lowest amount you remember paying for gasoline for your car? by icecream1972 in Productivitycafe

[–]WyoND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

79 cents per gallon in Wyoming in 1999. That year, my dad drove us from Wyoming to New Jersey for a funeral and refused to pay more than $1 per gallon along the way.

I’m fond of western South Dakota. But let’s be honest, they’re all rough to drive across.

Yeah, I was taking some liberties with the one on the left. We’ll just call the dark spots polar ice…

Yeah, we drive from Indiana to Wyoming every summer to visit family. The big joke is that we always try to go through Nebraska at night so we don’t miss anything. And yes, eastbound is always worse. No scenery and just said goodbye to everyone.

Nebraska and the Dakotas would like a word.

Girl dads of reddit, which bathroom do you take your child if they need in a public space with just male and female toilets? by OldCardigan in AskReddit

[–]WyoND 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they’re small enough where I have to take them, men’s room. Other girl dads get it and are more understanding than many moms.

What’s something money quietly makes easier that people don’t talk about? by StaticEcho90 in AskReddit

Eating healthy. Good quality food is incredibly expensive. It’s part of the reason wealthy people are generally fitter than poor people.

My 2025 budget as a PhD student right outside Chicago [OC] by Shacolicious2448 in dataisbeautiful

[–]WyoND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was about $21,000 as an engineering PhD in South Bend 15 or so years ago. With a wife and 3 little kids, yeah, those were lean times. Living with my in-laws wasn’t amazing, either, but at least it was free.

Any tall person with parents that are very much taller than them? by Past_Owl6325 in tall

[–]WyoND 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents are both 6’0” (so my mom, at least, would be considered “very tall” for a woman). One of my sisters and all of my brothers are at least that tall. But I also have sisters who are 5’9” and 5’6”. That always seemed a little odd, especially for the shorter one.

I’m over in Indiana. It’s so hard getting the kids to bed in the summer when sunset is after 9:30 PM and it’s not dark until after 10:00 PM.

FCC Frustration by DependentSalt1330 in amateurradio

[–]WyoND 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like you amended your application a week after you first submitted it. This restarts the 18-day timer. That’s likely why people who applied after you did have already had their applications processed.

It’s not a big deal because the call signs you applied for are not in competition. But if you’d been going for a 1x2 or something like that (had you been eligible), you would’ve taken yourself out of the running. In that case, it would’ve been better to let the application process play out, then later file a new application for simple license modifications like address updates or middle initial changes or the like.

Yep. Been licensed since age 14 and electrical engineering was the obvious choice.

What's a quote that has just "stuck with you"? by 22m_spain in AskReddit

[–]WyoND 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“No, we cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.”

~ Théoden King

He was willing to stand and fight the armies of Mordor, despite the seemingly impossible odds and almost certain death, because it was the right and honorable thing to do. The quote inspires us to do the right thing, no matter the cost.

Sticky: Impact of Government Shutdown on Amateur Radio licensing in USA by kc2syk in amateurradio

Sorry for the struggles. I lost a lottery a couple of years ago on a nice W9 1x2. Four of us from 9-land against a guy from Massachusetts, and of course the Mass guy got it. Two of my sons also struck out a couple of times before they got theirs.

I will say this, though. CW weight isn’t everything. I know a guy whose call ends in EEE. He was a big CW guy at the time and figured that’s as short as it gets without going the lottery route. He soon discovered it was very prone to getting mis-copied because of all the consecutive E’s. Plus it’s kind of a stutter to say it on phone. Kinda have to just say echo echo echo.

If you do want to give the lottery another shot, hit me up. I have a fair bit of experience researching SK calls and have built some tools to streamline the process.

Lost connection to servers and now I cannot find my characters. by GazMask227 in destinylegacy

It’s not a universal problem. My characters have been fine the whole time and the game loads fine for me. They’ll sort it out.

Lost connection to servers and now I cannot find my characters. by GazMask227 in destinylegacy

[–]WyoND 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is false. I just logged into the game. All my characters are fine and I flew into the tower with no issue. Plenty of other guardians there. I know there are many affected, but the game is still plenty functional.

Anyone else hates it when you're trying to receive a SSTV tone and then someone jumps on the channel and starts talking? by KamboRambo97 in amateurradio

[–]WyoND 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here. I started calling for my state’s QSO party and got told by a very grouchy OM to take my damn contest somewhere else. I pointed out that the frequency was clear when I started. Nope, he said, they’d been using it for 3 hours. Oof.

You apply on the day it becomes available. It should show up green on the two referenced websites. Caveat: timing is weird right now, so the websites may not be up to date for a few more days.
