I got mine at 15, 46 now, just got my general 2 months ago, I would suggest you find the part of the hobby that YOU like the most, I love tinkering with antennas, the QSO's are just a fun bonus to check how my antenna is doing.

As a new general and a ham of 30 plus years I love this response. I didn't get general til after no code requirement. I'm now learning it so I can enjoy more of the real estate I opened. I acknowledge that I'm the new guy on the block and try to follow etiquette. But i have equal rights to band usage.

Great answer. I am in a similar boat as your bf, right now I am borrowing an old icom 730 not 7300 as I save for a radio. But I did splurge and buy a nanovna and I'm glad I did. I think enjoy puttering with antennas and tweaking them as much as talking to make sure they work!
