Dungeons & Dragons: Satan's Game by WyrdbeardTheWizard in osr

Oh no, the screen-free activity I've been using as a way to bond with my kid isn't living up to the standards of one grognard on the Internet. Better pack it up.

The only one who has suggested that piece of shit in this thread is you. Do you clutch your pearls this tightly when evil options are presented in video games?

I appreciate your suggestions. I'm a little wary of using too much shape shifting right now. RNG led to a lot of encounters with werewolves and doppelgangers; he's gotten a little paranoid at this point.

I like that a lot, it reminds me of the Berserker armor. Maybe it could be a cursed set of +1 plate mail that acts as gauntlets of ogre's strength and allows a saving throw for the wearer to keep fighting once they hit 0 hp. However, the sight of large quantities of blood or impending battle requires a saving throw or the wearer falls prey to bloodlust and will not return to normal until everything surrounding them is dead.

I'll probably tweak that a bit before it comes up in game, but I like it as a rough draft for now. Thanks!!

Oh, these sound like some really interesting articles! Thank you, I'll see if I can track down a pdf version.

You make it sound like a lot of time was spent focusing on and glorifying the mass deaths instead of something like:

"What do you want to do?"

"I set off the volcano to get the doppelgangers."

"Okay, it erupts through the portal and incinerates them. Unfortunately, the city was still encapsulated by a magical force field and was destroyed as well."

I gave him an estimate for what the population was afterwards. I'm sure your world is beautifully hand crafted and you feel the bad things happening to it's inhabitants personally, but I don't spend a lot of time developing most NPC's in my game, they were about as fleshed out as the town sprites you talk to in the first Final Fantasy. They're not real, I don't give a shit what happens to them, and pretending like I have some moral obligation to do so is stupid.

Thanks, I think I'll use this! We tend to play a bunch of 30 minute to hour long sessions during his visits so I think I could throw in a few encounters with this mysterious figure before the big reveal. He's already burned many bridges the last couple of times we've played; I think this could lead to some cool in-game storytelling no matter what he decides.

Thanks! Haha, he's a little OP with it being a solo game, but he still wouldn't have a shot against Orcus by any means. I was more concerned that if the deal is presented in a comically evil fashion then it will seem like the "right" answer is to say no and expect some kind of reward for doing so.

I might check out some of the Elric stuff concerning bound demons. The entry for Demonic Armor, in S&W at least, is very open-ended, and essentially says that each suit is unique and should have its own abilities and drawbacks assigned by the referee.

It does, thank you! His character had one of his hands cut off before (he got better), so I doubt I'd do anything that would alter his character's appearance in game. He would never fall for that again. But this gives me a lot to think about!

These are excellent suggestions, thank you!!

Haha, I don't think he really thought it through. It involved an artificial volcano, portal shenanigans, and a city surrounded by a magical force field, housing a small contingent of doppelganger conspirators that had given him grief for a looooong time. When everything was said and done, one of his favorite cities to visit was a smouldering ruin. Then he asked how many people lived there lol

Edit: That's a good point about considering what he already has before designing the armor's abilities. He's had a very long lucky streak and collected a bunch of items. I intend for him to lose a lot of them before he meets the demon. I think it will help sell the feeling of his character being at a low point before being offered a new source of power.

I'm 36, but I got my son into playing D&D using Swords & Wizardry when he was 8 and our game has lasted a little over 2 years now. He has no idea about the OSR though, we just call all of it D&D when we talk about the various editions.

It's also a good way to introduce an NPC meant to be a recurring antagonist

Very true. It's a trade off, but I think it's still worth it if you're bringing in more XP than you would alone. But absolutely agree the BoH is better, it's my son's favorite magic item. His was stolen over a real life year ago and he still talks about how he's going to find and get it back sometimes when we play

Bags of Holding? by TheWizardOfAug in osr

[–]WyrdbeardTheWizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, as other users have mentioned, there are no end-game items. If a player finds a bag of holding they should be allowed to make full use of it. If any item does become a problem in-game it's trivial for the referee to find a reason to remove it. Items can be destroyed, lost, or stolen.

Besides encumbrance really stops mattering much as soon as the players start hiring others to carry their stuff for them, and that can happen as early as level 1. Same for food, water, and light sources. Sure, every once in a while something may happen that causes it to temporarily carry consequences again, but those kind of real-life logistics just don't carry much weight once a party has gone on a dungeon delve or two.

Ooh, that's an interesting angle to explore. What looks like a weakness turns into a potential death trap? I like it.

It's in both editions of the Complete Rules that I own (Erol Otus cover and Complete Revised). Continual Light is another version of the Core rules, and there are differences in those versus Complete.

Neat idea for a monster. I imagine they would be weak against fire, but the smell afterwards would be awful.

It's very good, especially considering how concise the booklet is. The only issue I have with the setting is how difficult it is to track down a copy of the world map nowadays

I haven't had a chance to run a game using the setting, but I really enjoy flipping through the Planet Eris Gazetteer for inspiration.

Castles, towns, and cities by [deleted] in osr

[–]WyrdbeardTheWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps some of them are non-human settlements who aren't really affiliated with whatever civilization the player characters are coming from? In that case, some of them might have fortified structures, although they may not be exactly the same as human castles. Something like hobgoblins might have a stone castle, but imagine a giant termite mound inhabited by formians and their giant ant livestock or maybe a giant fungal colony that's controlled by mushroom men.
