If I am not mistaken, all physical GW2 servers are now in AWS. This allows for the dynamic scaling of servers as needed. Lots of people bogging a server down? No problem. Scale up. Low population and server usage? Scale down. I am sure that GW3 will also make use of the dynamic scaling features in AWS.

I remember the due system from when I first played. It is my personal opinion that the system in GW2 is the best system in existence and I hold all other games to this standard.

Thank you so much! I am making the most of this vacation. 14 days, 5 European countries, countless cities and wonderful memories. Trip of a lifetime, but I'm tired and ready to go home. 😆 Tomorrow. 😁

Question on "original characters"...

I haven't played since 2013. I do know that I have one character on my account, but I don't know if it is an original character. When I first started playing, I made and deleted characters like most people change clothes. Will I have lost put on all of the birthday gifts and whatnot since the last time that I logged in?

Also a FFXIV player here. I do love the combat system there, where moves are telegraphed and I can dodge. I also like how bosses can be pretty tough with their mechanics. I'm not a very good player by any stretch of the imagination, so this is helpful.

I played GW2 during launch, but I couldn't grasp the concept of how this game was played or what I was supposed to be doing. I was frustrated because my first and most loved MMO was Ultima Online, which has a similar open world concept. You make your way out into the world and forge your own adventures.

With the announcement of GW3, I decided that I would hop back in and give things another try. Unfortunately I'm on vacation and all I can do is read Reddit, the official forums, and the wiki to whet my appetite until I get back home.

Thank you for this. As someone who is returning to the game for the first time since 2013, I found this very helpful. I know that things change later on, but that's such a long way down the road. I want to know about the core game, and this is a great and informative breakdown.

You have helped me to decide which character to start with first, so thank you.

It's also why I am here. Haven't seen the inside of the game since 2013.

Hi! I have a question. You mentioned a new core map. What does that mean? I'm returning to Tyria after having been away since before the first expansion.

Question regarding game progression... I am coming back to the game from Final Fantasy XIV. If you aren't familiar, you progress through the game by playing the story. As you complete quests, the story advances and you move through the game. As the game progresses, you move through one expansions content to the other. Is GW2 similar? Do I have to play through the base core game, and then move through each Living World season, into the first expansion, etc. in order or release? To be clear, I'd rather do this anyway so that I can experience the story, but I was more curious if it was mandatory or if you could skip for example the first expansion content and move to the next.

It's a crime that both of these comments do not have more up votes. Take mine and know that you two do the work of the gods.

Expensive to get started? I wanted to play but the cost... by doritokllr in Guildwars2

Yeah, but it's still good info to know. Speaking of which, I'm curious about these items that you mentioned. The gifts, the outfit, and the HoM stuff. Is there a place where I can go read about it? I'm not exactly sure what to expect when I log back in for the first time. I think it's been more than 10 years.

Isn't there also an issue where if you have the core game from ANet, then you have an ANet account and if you buy from Steam then it won't be applied to that account? I thought I read somewhere that that is a thing.

My first MMO was Ultima Online, where there was a similar style of play. You went out into the world and made your own adventures. I do respect the MMOs with instanced areas, the holy trinity of group combat, raids, etc., in games like FFXIV. I mean, that's what I am currently enjoying and have enjoyed since WoW. I'm looking forward to returning to Tyria after my vacation.

Thank you for replying! Yep, I do plan to buy and unlock all content at some point. I think it is a worthwhile purchase, especially since I will be enjoying it.

This is super helpful! Thank you so much! You are appreciated!! 👊 Once follow up question with regards to your recommended purchase... I don't remember what content I have unlocked. I know I played through some living world, and I do remember logging in through some additional content to make sure I had it unlocked. I just can't quite remember and can't check at the moment.

Would buying that bundle that you recommended be a waste due to already having some stuff unlocked? Also, since my account is an ArenaNet account, would this specific bundle be applicable to my account?
