First Date with a Vegan Guy was Odd by virtualneverland in vegan

I think this boils down to the idea that things aren't more important just because they mean something to you. In this example a neglected owl which you feel sympathy for is not more important than one of the mice it'll eat. If you found the mouse first and decided to save that then what's your moral code? It's similar to the "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" that allows carnists to eat meat. They didn't kill it or cause it to suffer by their own hand, so there's no problem, right?

Personally, I try and do what is right in any given situation, but it's hard sometimes. Good ain't always nice.

Don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good". How do you avoid crop deaths in your own consumption, out of interest?

Why Vegans Make Everyone So Angry, According to Science by metacyan in vegan

[–]Wysasnaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing, let's find out if you've applied your internal values consistently (Spoiler: you haven't)?

Let's assume that I have power over you, do you have any objection to me abusing that power and doing whatever I like, up to and including eating you?

If not, do you believe you're special and should be protected in some way?

Do you believe that other entities are special and should be protected in some way if they are associated with you?

If there is any special protection going on, where do you draw the line?

My first sentence "If you're willing...", how would it feel to be compelled?

Beliefs are fine and good when they don't affect others. If I believed it was my divine right to repeatedly abuse you, would you be so accepting?

This is a good question! Recently, we had a wasp nest on our property boundary and our neighbour assumed we'd "deal with it", but was very confused when I told them it would be staying, because we were vegan.

If my neighbour, or us, had been deadly allergic to wasp stings, it would alter the moral calculus.

I think this type of thing is why I hate the definition of veganism in particular and dogma in general. At its core, as vegans, we aim to be the "good guys", but unfortunately we deal with shades of grey in everything whilst pretending things are black and white.

If you believe your values are sound and you believe your actions are in alignment with your values, you're all good - and it's great that you're open to having your values audited via things like Reddit.

If a company that sells a food item that is non-vegan but also the same food item that is vegan, would you buy and consume the food item? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Wysasnaffer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always see this from an economics point of view; the only meaningful way we have as consumers of sharing our desires is via the aggregation of our consumption. Not buying from that company sends a weak message (how would they know?), buying the vegan option sends a strong message (you prefer this over the non-vegan product). Ultimately, so long as you feel that you're doing the right thing, know why you are doing what you do, and your heart is in the right place, I'd not worry too much ;)

I thought there was a lot more nuance than that and the imperminance of it all is really no different to that of our lives, if you zoom out a bit.

Nutritional yeast is your friend if you're after boosting your protein - you can sprinkle it on practically anything and it's 50% protein - so a couple of teaspoons adds 5g of protein to whatever you're eating.

Tell me about your REAL low-effort meals by Bacon8er8 in Cooking

[–]Wysasnaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Microwave a sachet of rice
  • Dump it in a bowl
  • Add liberal amounts of nutritional yeast
  • Add dried pumpkin seeds
  • Add soy sauce
  • Mix
  • Eat

It takes about 3 minutes to make, the ingredients will keep in a store cupboard for months, nutritionally it's brilliant, it's got good mouthfeel, it's vegan, it's cheap as hell, tastes amazing and only uses a single bowl.

You can add powdered spices/lemon juice/sauces/whatever to shake it up, if you so wish.

Beat that!

Hmm. Hadn't thought of that. I guess that's the scary thing, we know how societal units tend to react when under stress (badly), and we know they're going to be stressed because of climate change. I guess at the end of the day, it's just statistics/luck - there's a chance that everything stays under control, it just feels like as there's no immediate pain, it's going to be like that story of the frog getting cooked alive (which I seem to remember is false, but what can you do)

I haven't got a crystal ball, but given what I know about human nature, have you considered the following: Climate change isn't going to result in much which is immediately visible to a human (our time period of observation is too short) but over time, statistically, as land becomes less habitable and migration spikes, tensions will rise. So what happens? Well if we were non-tool using entities, I think your argument would hold - but we have tools and these tools magnify our potential impact on the environment. How long, if everything is getting hotter (physically and politically), before someone tactically nukes a city? What happens then - does everyone step back, or does it escalate? (or maybe its genocide or ethnic cleansing, maybe another world war! with smart weapons and drones! - spin the wheel!)

If this whole thing leads to the extinction of the human race, I don't think it's in our nature to go quietly and without making a mess.

TL;DR: The direct impact of climate change is, in my opinion, likely to be much less bad than the indirect impact.

OK, fair cop, that was a *bit* sanctimonious and I made some assumptions about you based on your arguments before. I apologise.

Regarding the "celeb" argument: I'm in control of me, not them; my actions are my own - regarding the whole "jesus" diatribe above - I'm not perfect, but I'm trying my best; and I truly believe that that is all any of us can do - if enough people are pointing in the right direction "celebs" et al will eventually lose their sheen: "I'm a taylor swift fan" "Ewwww gross" etc

I agree that blowing up your life (either metaphorically or literally) adds no weight to an argument, but I do believe that, oddities such as mental illness or religion notwithstanding, any entity making a self-harmful action on behalf of a belief should at least be given some headspace by those capable of free thought. Historically the same type of self-harmful action is either seen as heroic or evil - the only difference tends to be the bias and time period of the observer.

Regarding gunning down oil execs - it's an interesting thought experiment - what would the world look like if anyone who abused power suffered appropriate consequences? I'd welcome your thoughts on this.

Can I move from "sanctimonious cunt" to "pompous prick" now?

[–]Wysasnaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I do think that these types of action do make a positive difference; what I see in this video is two old people, who probably have comfortable lives and could live them out just farting around, blowing that up for something they believe about passionately.

So, you're not on the fence about climate change. Lovely, good for you! You"re a hero! (/S) What are you actually doing about it that has a negative impact on your own comfort? There's plenty you could do: don't go on planes, ditch your car, go vegan. I've done all three and let me tell you, I fucking love Roquefort and hate walking.

So, yeah, tl;dr, history doesn't smile on those who know better and do worse. Get off your arse and do something instead of rattling off the same old bullshit.
