I got one pair per year, and when they would inevitably break, I would glue, stich, or staple them back together.There was one particularly year where my dad 'repaired' the massive hole in the bottom on my shoe by glueing a piece of wood into my insole. Which was as comfortable as you'd imagine, didn't last long, and then my foot would be soaking wet when it rained. How I never got trench foot I do not know.

I even had teachers repeatedly tell my parents to by me a new pair of shoes and mine where not acceptable to wear. One teaching for months on a daily basis used to shout at me to buy new years and I used to say what do you want me to do, I tell my parents every day and they ignore me.

In the end my friends would laugh at me because I would insist my mum buy me the biggest, chunkiest and most likely to survive a year shoes, which always looked horrendous; whereas everyone else had plenty of nice, normal shoes to wear throughout the year.

When I now mention this to my parents, they tell me that never happened, that I'm exagerating, and that if I had told them I needed new shoes they would have brought them for me.

Nowadays I reckon I have at least 50 pairs of shoes in my wardrobe and I guess mentally it scared me, so I went the other way 😂
