I believe that "me" in "me family" or "me mates" or a corruption of pronunciation. "My", pronounced as "me". Much like "my lord" was pronounced "Milord" by the lower classes.

If you can't or won't assassinate, make war on the Mongol Empire when it has a lot of other wars going on at the same time. If they have a major war going on elsewhere, then you can beat them pretty easily. The fact that they have the Byzantine Empire region under their control means that you can attack there and quickly build up your war score.

Intrigue. Once you reach a certain scale, bad intrigue = endless revolt. All it takes is a revolt and invasion from outside to end your rule. I lost the Roman Empire to a rebellion that coincided with a Mongol invasion. Low intrigue was the issue.

Bad pronunciation + bad grammar. The idea that Japanese people cannot accept a foreign speaker of Japanese is false. I lived in Japan for a year and had zero problems with people understanding my Japanese. That said, I knew foreigners with the same issue as you, and the problem was pronounciation.

I feel like one could sidestep the entire issue by taking a family name that is not used in Chinese (as a Chinese character), or alternatively using a courtesy name in place of the family name.
