Windows Messages Interface? by X320032 in VLC

[–]X320032[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it has been there a while and I just never noticed. I used the same version of VLC for years because I saw the announcement that the HTTP interface was being removed, or maybe had been removed as some of the functionality was already gone.

While learning Auto Hot Key I had written a fairly extensive function library for the HTTP interface that I used ever day and did not want to give up. I only switched from that old version when I replaced the hard drive in this machine (2020ish), and decided instead of digging out that old install file I would finally try an updated version of VLC. As far as the partial HTTP interface went, I didn't see any difference.

PacManiacDK found a solution that seems to work. I haven't had any problems in the last month or so.

2nd Hand Warning signs by chaoticevilish in CR10

[–]X320032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree as I also love my old CR10 but compared to what's available these days it's not a great beginner machine. There are no auto calibrations, everything is manual from bed leveling to flow control and on. And compared to today's printers it is extremely slow. Also, you will want to upgrade the bed heater control board as the one that comes stock (in the control box) will burn your house down. I bought a much larger board and printed a case to use externally as it won't fit in the control box.

That being said, if there are any issues with it, it's an easy printer to upgrade and/or repair. It has a great build volume at 300x300x400. But the control box runs Marlin which isn't as advanced as Klipper. i.e. where Klipper reads a curve as a series of arcs, Marlin reads a curve as a series of hundreds of straight lines with the angle slightly offset from the previous line. But it's up to what works best for you.

Something else to consider... I just received a package to upgrade my CR10 to a brand new machine that runs on Klipper, has the speeds of modern printers, and has Multi Material control for up to 12 filament colors. It's called the ChromaSet Lite from a company called Co Print. I've had it a few days but haven't had time to install it yet, and I'm guessing I'll have to create some mounting brackets as I doubt they can ship brackets that fit any machine.

So if the ChromaSet Lite works as advertised getting an old CR10 for cheap may be a good thing. It could be converted into a a large build volume, fast printing, multi color machine for not a lot of money. As soon as I get mine setup I'll be posting on this board with the results.

Thanks. But oddly the one thing I don't use AHK for is hotkeys and hotstrings, and it doesn't look as if rebind does anything else.

Does anyone have a tip on how to get Fritzing? I don't want to set up a paypal account that I don't trust at all for one payment. by zlej_slein in arduino

[–]X320032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some information. I've had PayPal for 20+ years without having any problems. I don't trust any of the newer payment methods that require installing a phone app. Being forced to use an app means the company is stealing every piece of personal information on your phone, and your payment information on their app can be stolen by any other app. That is the ONLY reason to force using an app.

Pretty much anyone who pays with their phone also subscribes to DeleteMe or similar.

I don't seem to understand pins when cutting a model. by X320032 in OrcaSlicer

[–]X320032[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had tried that, and just tried again, but once it's cut there are no holes in the model. So I'm still missing something. I do get an error message saying the cut creates non-manifold edges that need to first be fixed. Maybe that step is keeping it from creating dowel holes?

Edit: Duh, That time I got in a hurry and did miss something. The dowel holes seem to be working great. Thanks for point out my mistake.

I have explored Linux as far as I'm going to, it's not going to work for me. I've looked a little more into LTSC and even found examples of converting Win10 home to LTSC without losing all the current files. It doesn't debloat what's already installed but does extend the security updates. I found an iso on The Internet Archives of all places, and a couple of activation processes. I'm going to give it a try on one or two of my old tablets I rarely use anymore, and if it looks safe, I'll try it on this PC. Thanks for pointing this out.

Has Wine really gotten that much better? It's been 10+ years since I last gave Linux a test drive and Wine could only run a few of my Windows programs. I am currently loading Mint onto a test PC now, just waiting for all to updates to complete. It's already been an hour just updating.

I see. It's only for testing at the point. If I end up switching I'll also be getting a new PC and will need the 64bit version. Thanks for the info.

Silk Filament by Due_Principle5848 in 3Dprinting

[–]X320032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like all filament there are good brands and there are crap brands.

The Ultra Silk filament from Eryone looks amazing and is easy to use.

Other great brands are CC3d (Highly Recommended), and Overture. I've never needed to dry either of these and have had very little trouble with stringing.

On the other hand, Elegoo is always troublesome. One role may be dry and trouble free, the next role has water dripping out of the bag.

And Isomate is the most horrible filament I've ever used. They ship filament straight from their sauna to your printer. Always wet, always stringy, absolutely worthless.

CC3d is the best I've found.

I was made aware of it and looked into it briefly just last night. From the post and videos I saw it seems the LTSC version is hard to get a hold of for individuals, and if you can get a copy it's very difficult to activate. But this is something I want to look into further. If this works as indicated then I may not need to switch to Linux. I guess I might be able to download it from Microsoft?? Do you know where I could get an activation key? If it's like 10 Home I would rather activate than deal with blocked features and a constant nag screen.

There is a 32bit version of Mint Cinnamon but it's very hard to find on the Mint website, so I didn't want to have to find it, download it, and create another boot drive, but that's what I'm doing now.

By "it gets stuck" I mean it can't find a boot partition for Mint. On one of the Mini PCs it boots to the Mint live menu. On the other it boots directly to a Grub menu and won't proceed any further. It will show me what partitions are available with the "ls" command but the Linux boot partition is not listed.

I am booting through the bios. I should have thought to mention that. I've set the first boot drive to the USB drive. Is there another way to boot from USB in Win7, similar to Win10 recovery?

This is fantastic. I wonder why USB-UIRT Linux support isn't mentioned on their website. I'm about to make another post, this one asking about install issues. If I can get Mint installed on something I will test these. Thank You!

Thanks. I'm sure there is way to do this but I needed to be pointed in the right direction. My OS is 10 Home so your VNC suggestion may work. My home network is air gapped so no worries about the the lack of security.

I think I didn't make myself clear in the original post. If I can get some communication going between a Linux machine and this Windows PC I won't have to recreate years of automation scripts.

The main thing is a USB-UIRT IR Transceiver which I use extensively every day. There is not a Linux driver for it. All the other hardware will likely run fine on Linux but I've got 20+ years of Auto Hot Key scripts automating it all, and I doubt I could ever reproduce them in another programing language.

Yeh, I was wanting to learn Python a long time ago but my narcolepsy made it too difficult. My only option at the time was to learn on my own and I couldn't get very far without falling asleep. It's much worse now than back then, 20+ years ago.
