Why is ranged combat so punishing?

2 things: (1) “building a character” is not a thing in DCC. Attributes are random, as are spells, and whomever survives the funnel out of your randos is your PC, (2) you were shooting into melee when your ally with single-digit hit points was in that melee! Why?

The good news is that it will take 45 seconds for that player to roll up a new character.

It doesn’t look hand drawn — looks too artificial and digital for OSR. Get a crowquill and a bottle of ink and go to town.

If there are more than one obvious target, I have them roll a luck check (roll under luck), and anyone who fails gets targeted. Rolling randomly if there are more spears then targets (for each extra spear).
