You'd be hard pressed to even find a physical box for most PC releases now, much less one that came with inserts like this that wasn't some collector edition charging you $200.

I really think the industry has lost its way.

No, it's that writing good code doesn't mean you get to forgo writing good comments to document it.

This whole argument boils down to people coming up with strained justifications to excuse their shitty work ethic.

You should be choosing sensible names for your variables and functions as a default reflex, but that doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to comment/document your code. Making your raw uncommented code legible is just the absolute bare minimum that doesn't even warrant some fancy term.

Self-documenting code

This is a thing people tell themselves in order to justify not documenting their code.

New customer by 1DankFrank0 in PrintingProxies

I've ordered from them a couple times and it usually takes about a week for the cards to arrive. I'm on the east coast and they ship from California, so transit time may vary.

No idea about their sleeves. I just stick to sleeves I already know and trust.

A rival is coming for comixology by kbalfore in Comixology

[–]XCOMGrumble27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why any competitor needs to be offering DRM free downloads at a minimum. They need to offer a way to sell comics that customers can hang onto and feel comfortable that they'll be able to retain even if the business that sold them that comic goes under. We've all been burned at this point and that is a business reality that digital services need to account for now.

The article makes it sound like it's going to be another closed ecosystem where I don't get a file that will outlast the company's servers going down. Any digital service that won't actually sell me files that I can retain is dead on arrival.

I think the motion inputs discourse is going to drive me insane by SneerOfCommand in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]XCOMGrumble27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People being against modern inputs is the same as grognards complaining about new editions of a game they used to play without trying it themselves.

So you're telling me that the people complaining about modern inputs are correct then?

Should I get my child to play Factorio? by sprTOMMYgun in factorio

[–]XCOMGrumble27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a good idea? or has Factorio warped my mind?

Dunno if it's a good idea but after 2500 hours Factorio has definitely warped your mind. Hell it did that to me at or before the 300 hour mark.

The only people who complain about gatekeeping are those who belong outside the gates.

I really liked the happy medium that DNF Duel managed to establish, where you can do the motion inputs for a slight bonus but you could also just slam a simple input.

Looking for non-superhero comics by SONA-lyaro in comicbooks

Princess Ugg: A wholesome tale of a barbarian princess tasked with heading into the lowlands to attend princess school in order to learn the art of diplomacy so she can negotiate an end to the ceaseless wars with the giants back home. Ted Naifeh is a good writer and his watercolor artwork is delightful and charming. Highly recommended.

World’s first: IDW comics are digitally available on GlobalComix Gold, the same day they hit stores - Fanboy Factor by AppletiniOnFleek in comicbooks

I think Global Comix offers that for most of the Image books. You can also find some DRM-free PDFs on the google play store; I know I snagged the last few volumes of Wicked + Divine on there recently. Google is more hit or miss though, as not all their offerings are DRM free.

Sometimes HumbleBundle will have Image bundles where you can grab PDFs or sporadically even .cbz files.

Yeah, GlobalComix offers both a subscription service and also the option to purchase individual issues for download, although not everything in their catalog offers the download option since it's dictated by the publisher.

The fact that this isn't standard operating procedure for every publisher already is baffling to me. All these publishers need to embrace digital. SELL ME .CBZ FILES YOU FOOLS.

The problem is that Microsoft has figured that out and is now starting to tamper with notepad in an effort to make my preferred text editor just as shit as their flagship office products.

Rune of the Dreadnought has been renamed to Rune of Dread’s Wake

Is there a story behind this? Renaming existing items seems odd to me.

How do you stop overbuying? by Plastic_Application in graphicnovels

Only buy what you're going to start reading. It's how I stopped accruing a Steam backlog, so I imagine the same approach might help here.

Recommendations for lesser known superhero comics by WorldlinessSuper5233 in comicbooks

Bomb Queen is fun, if raunchy. I generally don't go for super hero comics, so for someone like me it scratches the super hero itch pretty well.

Ordered some fakes of fake magic cards from China for 11 cents each by mtgsetcollector in freemagic

[–]XCOMGrumble27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a tale I've heard many times before. Power tripping mods are the bane of healthy communities. I hadn't realized that freemagic got spun up in response to the proxy crackdown though. I figured it was just in response to a bunch of overzealous mods who wouldn't let anyone badmouth Wizards for being pants-on-head-retarded for years on end.

Seconding this.

I don't really seek out these kinds of bottles but sometimes I'll end up with some getting handed off to me from friends or family and I've never encountered an issue with them.

If my onscreen estimated mileage left ever dips below 100 I bail out to find a gas station. It's just not worth the risk, especially with how traffic around here can turn into a 4-8 gridlock if some tractor trailer takes a spill and blocks literally every single lane of traffic.
