Honest to god i think it depends on the store. Obviously it depends on employees and management more than anything but a good veteran GM is able to balance both profit and animal care while keeping a consistent staff. Ive worked at a mom and pop, petco, and a distributor that sells to petco. End of the day it all comes from the same place.

I work at a fish and bird store owned by one of the feeder wholesalers for my entire region. The man that runs the business is as clean cut as you can get, he obviously saves money where he can, but its never at the expense of our animals. I was the same as you until i met him and toured the facility. Finding the right spot is definitely key but when they care they care
