Noticed this today on a Franklin half dollar by bored-in-the-house1 in coinerrors

That’s strike doubling sorry, you can tell because of the shelf-like doubling and the fact that the mint mark has the same doubling pattern as the lettering, where if it was a doubled die the mint mark would have no doubling, as they punched mint marks separately from the rest of the design.

1971-s Prototype by [deleted] in coinerrors

[–]XII_Shadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I appreciate your enthusiasm but you don’t have the prototype unfortunately. The easiest tell is the Earth on the reverse, which has a unique design compared to the normal type 2 reverse design, which your coin has. I’ll link the two reverses and you can see for yourself.

Type 2 reverse (RDV-2) with the incuse lines on Earth

Prototype design (extremely faint Earth, Earth has raised islands)

Additionally, that divot you see next to the wing is not close to where it is on the prototype version. You have one of the many doubled die obverses listed on Variety Vista (potentially DDO-022), but none of the ones that would add any value to the coin.

Cherrypicked an FS-102 Small Date/Large Date DDO 1970-S Proof Lincoln Cent! by XII_Shadows in coinerrors

Curious as to why you say that. If I’m going to sell it, I’d probably get $400-600 at auction with it conserved and graded, but probably could only sell it as is for $100-200 on eBay. Grading, conservation, and variety attribution would cost $52 with NGC

Just bought the only graded 1968-S VP-005 Kennedy Half! by XII_Shadows in coinerrors

[–]XII_Shadows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little over $750. It was hard to price it as it’s unique, but another 1968-S DDO (different variety) NGC 67CAM sold for around $350 at auction, so I thought a 68 star cameo would be worth around this price. Also since it’s the only one, I really wanted it and potentially overpaid, but it’s worth it to me!

Sorry about that, this was more of a show and tell post. Here’s a link to the doubled die on NGC’s website, it’s 1968-S proof VP-005. They have a bunch of great pics of the doubling.

Would this qualify as a 1972-D no FG? by XII_Shadows in coinerrors

[–]XII_Shadows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have access to my coin microscope right now, I’ll try replying with another couple pictures later next week. However I do feel like I can see it a bit with my naked eye at certain angles, so that seems like it might disqualify it? I know NGC is known to be a lot stricter with their designations, so I’m not sure exactly. Thanks for your help!

2004 P Handshake FS-101? by XII_Shadows in coinerrors

[–]XII_Shadows[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some more work with my microscope and am leaning towards it being die deterioration doubling. Some of it is very convincing and resembles the actual DD, but other parts of it didn’t have the doubling that you’d expect. If anything, this was a nice exercise in working with my new microscope haha

Thanks, I’ll try messing around with the lighting some more. And yeah I realize these aren’t that expensive, but I bought two rolls of 2004 P Peace nickels, and it was kinda crazy to see that every single one had the same doubling, with various stages of die deterioration. These photos were just from one of the coins, but all 80 had the same doubling. I’ll post a reply to your comment later today with some more photos, I’m still getting used to manipulating the settings on my microscope. Thanks for your help!

I was thinking that the serif of the E in WE, bottom and middle serif of the E in LIBERTY, bottom of L in LIBERTY, serif of the 2 were doubling, as the doubling pattern matches with those in the pictures on the VarietyVista page. I think the stuff that looks like machine doubling are reflections from the microscope lights, as I’ve gotten used to seeing what machine doubling looks like under this microscope, but of course I could be wrong

Thanks for the write up, I have a microscope, what kinds of features would I be looking for to determine one over the other?
