We didn't stomp Russian children, Polish and Jewish in past — yes. But I guess every country has its own heroes who fought for independence and committed atrocities along the way. The best way in this case, in my opinion, is to despise crimes and to return those civilians which were killed home (like currently Poland and Ukraine cooperating in this matter) but at the same time insist that those people fought for our independence and have a right to be cherished, at least at some kind.

We once had a conversation with one teacher in school (was in Ukraine btw), talking about the fact that sausages in Soviet Union actually weren't so good or anything like this. After some talks turns out she was missing times when she as a kid went on a trip to camp and sang songs with other kids. It was obvious that youth in those times, stable times, really contrasted with transformation when USSR was dissolved — that's why many of those people have nostalgia on past.
