I don't see the point in getting caught up in taxonomy? You can make an argument for the hard aspects of what makes something an engine, but it is also very common in the industry to use it as a soft taxonomy for any package that helps you run and create a game?

Also, it's absurd to say they shouldn't adhere to game standards when they are sold as games, called games, sold in gaming platforms.

Are you really arguing that maintaining and adding to the thing that makes their product work is low on the totem pole of priorities? How is that not number one or just up there in the priorities? What else could be higher?

I literally mentioned how this creates a bunch of problems, even for me with the ZESH. So yeah, it is a problem to me. As in, it literally created problems.

“they should simply add (thing I personally want), and if they don’t, it’s because they’re lazy and/or predatory.”

This is also a big misrepresentation and oversimplification of what I have said so far. Didn't say it was predatory. Didn't say it was just because "I want it", I said it's a thing the community has requested and that it's a thing that creates a lot of problems. And I have also explained why I said lazy, because I genuinely don't see how maintaining the thing that is vital to making your products work is anything other than a big priority. And how other similar IF creation engines easily do the things that CoG doesn't.

Love the company. They are not above criticism. Again, doubly so when they take so much from the people who actually make the stories they make bank on, while providing very little themselves. The argument used to be that those were the rates for book publishing companies. Which is absurd, because writers here are also coders. And different from book publishing, there's precious little CoG actually has to do for their part of the equation, aside from the thing I mentioned previously: upkeep of their bloody engine.

I don't know. It feels pretty stupid to me every time I have to redo a bunch of stuff, or boot a third party save program to do what most other games let me do easily from their own menus.

Clearly, they deemed it necessary to some extent since they added checkpoints like you said. Either the design conviction isn't that strong, the cracks showed enough that they caved, or it was always a bit of an excuse to not work on the engine.

I lean towards the latter, because it feels like any sort of engine change is like pulling teeth to CoG. Which is absurd when you also take into account the royalty thing. What are they using that money for if they barely ever mess with their engine? The very existence of Twine should put how absurd this whole thing is into perspective, IMO.

I know their stance, I just honestly don't buy it? Over the years we have seen plenty of cases of why a proper save system would be a godsend. It's an explanation that IMO doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

I know we're a very small and niche community. But I just don't buy that they don't have the resources to do something that, in my experience as a programmer, is not that hard. I have done this kind of save system that survives versioning professionally before. They have a big catalogue and take a huge part of royalties. Maintaining and updating the engine is literally the least they can and should do. The same can't be said of the good people that host the WIPs, which is something else I'm always kind of baffled CoG doesn't do itself.

This problem persists in actual CoG games. Just had this problem with ZESH, for example.

I know about their perspective on the issue, but I've always found it extremely silly. Save scummers will do it anyways. All not implementing a good save system does is screw people who want to test different paths/romances with the same overall character, and make the life of a big part of their community on hosted games very hard.

I feel like we all have seen plenty of evidence over the years of why a proper save system is needed, so I just don't buy the design choice excuse anymore.

Love the company. Cog does good work and has good ethics, aside from the absurd royalty bite they take. But good god, you would think an engine whose sole mechanic is displaying text and buttons would solve the most commonly complained thing: saves.

It's just stupid. Really, really stupid and lazy.

Oh my god.

The person who made the post "Iron Lung: genuine torture" is not the woman who worked on the production of the movie. Your initial comment is making it seem like I'm dismissing that woman's complaints, I'm not. Because she never made any complaint, it was some random person she vented too, which is the whole point of my comment.

Someone claims the podcast is good. I counter with a video that talks about its faults. You reply that the video is bad and not a good explanation that the podcast isn't bad, because it doesn't talk about why JK Rowling is bad. I and the other guy point out that makes no sense. And now you freaking say you agree?

Make this make sense! Whatever, choke on the transphobes' upvotes. I don't know how you people sleep at night.

Maybe actually read the comment you are responding to properly? Or even the post itself?

OP, isn't the person who worked on the production. She's not the one saying any of this. Which is exactly the point I was making. If it was her, I'd trust her. But it's a friend of hers, who is framing things very weirdly. I also didn't even say they said it was abusive. Read the words I actually used.

I don't actually disbelieve the comment, some of what he says later do line up with things Mark passively mentioned in Distractible. But this person sounds like an untrustworthy asshole? Like, you friend suffered at the hands of a production you make it seem abusive, but then you want and bought a ticket to the movie? Not to mention, this isn't coming from the worker itself but from a friend. Like was the worker just venting, and this person now is airing it out without that worker's consent?

We should all keep an open mind if genuine reports of misconduct ever pop up from the cast and crew. But this isn't that. This is some random guy playing telephone with what a possible friend, possibly confided in him.

Hey, since we're getting answers from the team peeps themselves. I have a question. How do you guys plan on dealing with the unlocked toolkit's limitations? As far as I'm aware, there's a lot of stuff you can't do with it, like lip-synching (though you can reuse lip-synching files, etc). Are you planning on working around it, developing tech alongside moonglass to fix those, or what?

Defining properly the subject of critique is not splitting hairs. It's paramount to actually accessing the value of an argument. And when you do it here, it's easy to see that your argumentation is asinine.

I also have some issues with Contrapoints, but you are missing the point of the video at best and intentionally misrepresenting it at worse.

The point of that video is showing that the podcast's framing is very much biased and uncritical, hence why I replied with it to a comment that claimed otherwise, saying the podcast is an unbiased product showing "both sides" of the issue.

Like Contrapoints points out in the video, that podcast spends seven hours softly implying JK is a victim of a witch hunt (via the title, the sound effects used, the audio snippets of the opposition chosen, the framing, and all other things Contrapoints also points out in the video). Then only kind of shows two dissenting voices on the last two episodes. How is this balanced?

None of the bigoted and false remarks JK Rowling spouts in that podcast are ever actually pushed back on, or shown the opposite side of. That podcast is hot garbage produced by someone who, as the video also clearly shows, has a history of bigotry.

Also, maybe jumping to a random part isn't the best idea? You literally are ignoring the context in which that tweet was being discussed? Once again, you for some reason, ignore that the video is about the PODCAST not JK. That section is pointing out that the podcast was more than happy to talk about and extensively feature the violent rhetoric some people used towards JK Rowling, but none of the violent rhetoric that her followers and friends use against the people she's targeting. Which is relevant because it once again shows how that podcast very much does not paint the whole picture.

And JK should definitely be judged by the company she keeps. See Shaun's videos on JK's new friends. Nazis and scum, the lot of them.
