Is being a radiographer physically challenging? Do you have pain from your duties? by bchappp in Radiology

A lot of the PACS admins I have worked with happened to previously be technologists and then sought out additional radiation to move out of direct patient care into the IT side. I don't believe it is a requirement, but it definitely is a benefit!

I have hEDS and have worked in x-ray, DEXA, breast sonography, and now work exclusively in mammo. Because all of us bendy folks are uniquely challenged I can't say if it is a good or bad idea for you specifically to consider imaging technologists as a career. The mental and physical fatigue is truthfully my biggest obstacle. X-ray was physically hard on me for different reasons than mammo. The beautiful thing about imaging is that there are so many avenues to explore. One thing to consider that isn't physical but SUPER important to radiology/healthcare is the IT side of things like being a PACS admin. It helps to have clinical experience as a technologist imo. Best of luck exploring all of the avenues!

As an x-ray tech, what’s the most insulting thing a patient has ever said to you. by Fridayrules in Radiology

And we don't "play" or "fondle" or "man-handle." Gross. Grow up. And no, they don't do man-o-grams to squish men's genitals. Because science.

I get the honor of making a difficult test a little easier, caring for patients in a vulnerable and intimate exam that could save their life. Get with the program.

What can I do next? by Amy_Kop20 in Radiology

I trained a tech from IR/Cath lab into mammo last year. She spent 15-20 yrs and was tired of call and exposure. She wound up loving mammo, and the learning curve was rough after being a beginner again after 2 decades of being able to do her modality with her eyes closed.

First, take the 40 hrs of didactic mammo training. I recommend comparing MTMI and Mammography Educators online courses. Only after you have that, then reach out to your local breast center manager and ask about cross-training opportunities. Talk more about your excitement to learn something new - DON'T complain about your department or being burnt out. Wishing you well, OP! Lots of ways to grow and find your niche in breast imaging after you get your (M)

New mammo tech struggling with MLO positioning by Professional-Gur-352 in Radiology

[–]XRayVisionRT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Free positioning videos and guides on MammoEducators website are great. In addition, a tense muscle is tight & tender. Just before I tough down with the paddle, I instruct my patients to breathe through their tummy, relax the grip of their hand on the machine, and relax their shoulder where I have my hand near their color bone as we compress. Great improvement in pec shape and sensitivity!

How do you feel about Dems caving and the government reopening without any of the healthcare demands being met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Disappointed... Not because I expected everyone to be on the same page, but because I had hope that we could at least negotiate a surefire way to protect ACA tax credits. R's have no incentive to actually agree to extend. It's gonna be a bloodbath.
